So I ditched the bowl

Title says it all. Since getting a Wilkinson Shave Stick in a trade I have become obsessed not only with sticks, but face lathering as well. I even enjoy face lathering the occasional cream too. I find that I can work up a better, more protective lather on my face than I ever could using a bowl. In fact, I no longer have a bowl amongst my shave gear! I would suggest trying it if you haven't already. My top three face lathering sticks are Valobra, Wilkinson, and Palmolive just for reference.

yeah not having to clean the bowl is super sweet if you are feeling extra lazy, plus its pretty damn near impossible to mess up face lathering with a stick! Plus it really highlights the properties of certain brushes i think-softness of tips, density and what not. I love irisch moos, palmolive, and valobra for shave sticks, all great performers and reasonably priced!

I have heard good things about the Speick shaving stick. I have yet to try it.

Oh yeah...Speick is good too, I just like the scents of the other three I listed better. And FWIW, I face lather with bowl soaps too - think DRH Lavender

A bowl is okay for experimenting with various ‘mixes’ or uber-lather, but I feel it is just one more thing to clean up. I can easily “ditch the bowl” as I never used a mixing bowl until I started viewing this site last November. I had always face lathered since the 70’s, and I still prefer to face lather with soaps, creams, and sticks… something about the brush ‘working’ the skin as you build the lather that makes for a much more comfortable shave IMHO.

I'll occasionally pull out my scuttle during the colder months for creams just to keep the lather nice and warm between passes but, 99.9% of the time, I face lather. I like it because I get instant tactile feedback on the quality of the lather and feel it preps my beard better.

I recently started face lathering after picking up some Palmolive shave sticks.
I've found it to be quite an effective way of using soap and has been better for me than normal soap pucks in bowls etc.

The hard part for me is the cost of some of the higher end shave sticks. You lose almost half the soap for the same cost, but the ease of use is nice sometimes.

I just got my first shave stick from SCS. Can't wait to use it. I dig face lathering, though sometimes i'll use the bowl just to see how much lather I can get.

Boots, Mennen, La Toja, and BEA are all very good sticks. As is the $2 VDH select shave soap when melted and poured into a propel/repel twist up stick.

Especially the VDH 'shave stick'. :001_wub:

BTW, Sue at SaintChalesShave.com creates a dynamite stick in a variety of 'flavors'.

After using Arko for a bit I too found it a bit easier to face lather soaps. Creams, on the other hand, work best for me in a bowl. They're just much more sensitive to the amount of water added.

I tried using a bowl maybe 3 times. It seemed unnecessary and awkward for me. I face lather everything.

Face lathering definitely the way to go. Ditched my bowl over a week ago and haven't regretted it one bit. Lather builds like a dream, can guage the texture with ease, and my shaves have improved no end.
