What's new

So, I bought a straight on eBay...

I know, I ased for it. Technicaly, I bought three razors on eBay. The pictures looked okay, and I'm thrilled with the DE Tech that came in the deal. I also got some funny replaceable blade straight, but I'm probably just going to either let it sit around forever or sell it somewheres.

Now to the fun stuff. As soon as I got my new straight, I decided to take a look at it, see what cleaning it needed, and discovered this:

It made me a little queesy.

So I flipped it over and saw this:

So with my stomach dropping to my feet I look at the front tip:

Oh good lord, it gets better. No pics, but I just looked at the edge applied to a flat surface, and there's a noticeable bow inwards of the blade. In other words, with a light behind it the front and back of the blade touch for a milimeter or two, and the rest of the blade has light visible through it.

So my questions are: Does anyone recognize the handiwork with the dremel artist here so I can thank them with a 2x4? Also, what grind is this? Did someone basically completely regrind this thing as it looks to me, or is this just a truly horribly made razor? Is it possible to fix this? With proper honing can the issues with the "flat" of the razor be ignored? Please note, I'm not looking for pretty, I'm usually more of a functional person.

For anyone wondering, it's a Genco Henry's XX, from Geneva NY. Or it used to be.

I would probably throw that thing away and never let it get near my face. Furthermore, I would fantasize about tracking the person who sold it to you down and wring their neck.

Sorry you got a rotten deal. I don't know maybe one of the masters here can fix that for you? Won't look pretty but may be usable?

PS - Is that a stuffed teddy bear... LOL... and your avatar is making me hungry :(

What kind of pictures did the seller have that hid all of that damage? It looks like they tried to make a Japanese straight out of it.

:yikes:

Mein Gotts! what travesty is this? What fresh hell would cause someone to do THAT to a perfectly innocent razor! Hands up all those who want to practice shaving on the offender of this Evil Action with their abortive creation?

I know I certainly do.

Unfortunately it's toast, More then just toast, but Very Toast, Perhaps contact the seller with a negative feedback? as this should have never been sold in that condition

Looks like someone tried to make it a double edge straight, but changed their mind halfway.
I feel your pain, never fun to get screwed over...

Have you contacted the seller to hear his explanation?

Do you by any chance have a picture from the eBay listing, would be fun to see how someone can hide :glare: such flaws

Listing link And looking at the pic, I stand by my decision. Looks like it's just in need of a good cleaning. also, shows "All in good shape".

Yes, theat's a Ty beanie seal. What can I say, my kid's toys abound, and I just grabbed the nearest thing to prop it up.

Thanks for the opinions, and the advice. I may do my best to work on it, with the understanding that it's a "learner" razor. I figure if I can make this shaveable, I can do anything.

Alreadt left positive feedback, and eBay won't let you change it, so I hosed myself there. It didn't looka s bad fresh out of the package, and only upon looking at it with my eyes open did I decide it was pretty much hosed. Good thing I got a beautiful Tech out of the deal.

It's looking like that, honestly. instead of a nice "ting!" sound when I use the fingernail trick, it sounds more like I'm flicking the end of a credit card.

Selling a thing that is in that shape seems borderline unethical. I've given away razors in way way way better shape than this as I found them of little worth.
