What's new

Small adjustments, big results~

I'm a teacher, and while last summer I was too enamored of my new "hobby" to skip a day, this summer . . . well, I'm a good bit more lax.

Which has meant, typically, that I've got anywhere from 2-3 days whisker growth going when I do shave. Two things I'm doing differently that have really kept that first pass from scraping:

1. Conditioner as pre-shave. I use a veterinary shampoo and conditioner, "Mane & Tail," which can be bought at, in addition to the grocery store, feed, pet and hardware stores as well. The conditioner can be rinsed out or left in . . . I rinse it out, but have been applying it to my whiskers and leaving it on before shaving.

Today, with three days growth, first pass was still a smooth, tug-free glide. Fantastic!

2. This is a tiny adjustment in technique that has yielded BIG results: shave my neck last. Every pass. I had been shaving one side, then the other---but when I shave my face first and THEN my neck in every pass, that little bit of extra time the lather stays in contact with my neck whiskers has made an incredible difference. Touch ups have been reduced to almost zero.

I still cannot get a good shave with more than 2 days growth. I don't know how you guys do it. I have about 10 different razors and they all struggle getting through the first pass with 3 days growth.

Maybe it's your blades. Feathers and IP's slice right through whatever I throw at them. I don't exactly have a thin beard either.

I have found that when I'm shaving a few days worth of stubble, it helps to take shorter strokes. I have found that with short strokes, frequent razor rinsing, and my 7 O'clock yellows, three days worth of growth is no problem. I also tend more toward my creams than my soaps when I have more than one days worth of stubble on my face.

Seriously, try the leave in conditioner. I put the Mane & Tail on my face while still in the shower and it soaks in by the time I towel off. Leaves the whiskers soft enough to shave right off.

Good advice, I have always heard good things about Mane and Tail. I'll have to give it a try.

I travel for work and sometimes I come home with a two or three day beard as well.

On these ocasions I use a Merkur HD 11c open comb razor, the open teeth allow the blade an unobstructed path through the hairs and also allow the cream/soap to stay on the hair until the moment the blade cuts the hair.

Er... I just have GOT to ask. How did you get the idea about trying out some veterinary shampoo and conditioner?

2 more words: SlantHammer + Feather.

This combo is at its peak when it has several days of stubble to harvest. BBS in 2 easy passes every time. Nothing else I've tried even comes close.

+1 except I;ve got the regular slant 37c. Its the only razor I use a Feather in and it truly specializes in 2 to 3 day growth.
