Slowly getting sucked in to quality teas

I really like tea. I love a good earl gray of English breakfast tea. Love Chai as well. Can't get enough of white and green teas, but have never had a quality puerh tea, or one of the fancy OOlongs talked about here. I filled a cart with some stuff for tea making including an Yixing pot and a few teas and its about 60 or 70 bucks shipped. I just want to try some quality teas and see if they are worth it to me. Money is a bit tight as it is for many right now. any suggestins to getting into it cheaper. I live near Denver if that helps make it cheaper. One of the saying I live by is, "life is too short to drink bad beer", but I can't afford something i don't like right now.

Just like razor blades- get samplers! Usually can be had for $15-20 shipped, 4 or so tins gets you 10-15 cups per tin. Try Upton Tea or Adagio teas- they seem to have good prices and quality.

I've been slowly getting into teas as well. It's fun so far.

All this stuff is evil. You slowly get sucked in and all of a sudden you have spent mucho dinero. I have a problem with liking the finer things in life. It happened to me with shaving cream, but I hope that will pay for itself eventually. I also have a problem with liking to make stuff for myself.

If money is tight, I don't recommend jumping into yixing. IMHO yixing is a very mixed bag. Some that I've had have actually made a lot of teas taste worse, or flat. Some do enhance the flavors of certain teas, but it'll take a lot of tasting to really appreciate a fine seasoned yixing anyway. I recommend a 100ml simple white gaiwan. It also eliminates a lot of variables. Steve sells these for $6.99.

So I was searching and trying to make an uninformed decision on what to try and came up with this::

Ceramic Gaiwan - White Elegance - 100 ml

2009 Wuyi Shui Xian Rock Tea - Ban Yan, Spring Tea - 25 grams

"Snow Dragon" Supreme Yunnan Pure Bud Green Tea
(Options: 25 Grams)

2009 Bai Mu Dan - Supreme Yunnan White Tea
(Options: 25 Grams)

2008 Menghai Peacock Series Sampler

Would this be a good started to find out about quality teas or would you all think I absolutely positively have to order a certain tea? I probably won't order until next week, so I have some time.

Thanks for any replies,

While I haven't tried any of the menghai peacock serie's I would recommend getting the standard raw/sheng/green menghai sampler, it has 3 of their more popular recipies. Your gaiwain and roasted oolong are a good choice :)

Dunno about the other two... perhaps someone else will chime in.

Big +1 to the last three posts! I do recommend getting the Menghai green sampler over the Peacock series as well, seeing as how only a few of the Peacock series are great while the rest vary from decent to alright. The best advice I can give you is sample, sample, sample! I can't stress that enough. Your taste buds will change drastically over the next few years, and continue to constantly evolve. Eventually before you know it, you'll probably be buying and brewing teas mainly for the aroma, mouthfeel, etc.

So I finally ordered up some teas.

I ordered the green tea sampler from Dens

And

* 1 x Early Spring 2009 Premium Silver Needles White Tea from Yunnan
(Options: 25 Grams)
* 1 x Big Red Robe "Wu Yi Rock Tea" Fujian Oolong (known as Da Hong Pao)
(Options: 25 Grams)
* 1 x Ceramic Gaiwan - White Elegance - 100 ml
* 1 x Raw Pu-erh Sampler

This from Steve at Jas

I echo the good selection and prices at Upton Teas. I have ordered from them for years without a single problem.
