Slim vs fatboy

I'm wondering what the difference is between the shave of a fatboy and a slim, I'm going to send my slim to get replated but I might want to try a fatboy first. If they are very similar, I will pass but if you guys tell me different ill look for one and give it a shot.

Ive wondered this as well. I have a Slim now and have been looking at getting a Fatboy. It must shave a great deal better judging by the price...

I have both a Slim and a Fatboy. Strange thing is that I prefer DE razors with longer handles (I have larger hands) but I prefer the feel of the Fatboy while shaving. The Slim is longer than the Fatboy, but the Fatboy is thicker/heftier. I think that Fatboys generally sell for more money because they are older and there are likely fewer left in circulation than Slims. I am a fairly novice DE shaver so it goes without saying that I stand to be corrected. A worldlier veteran will likely post a more accurate reply shortly.

In any event, I say that there's absolutely nothing wrong with owning both a Slim and a Fatboy. They both shave nicely and are VERY easy to sell if you chose that path. Good luck.

I have both and like them a lot. They both feel different in the hand, the fat boy having a thicker handle. But the weight is about the same. If I was forced to choose one, I think the slim would be my choice...but just barely. I use them equally in my rotation, and recommend each for their suttle differences.

FB is heavier and, maybe, somewhat more aggressive.

The pricing differential between FB and Slims is likely due to the relatively short time that FB were in production. Slims and Super Adjustables were around for a longer time.

Have used both (had my first shave with one or the other, but can't recall which, just that it was an adjustable circa 1962). The Fatboy was produced for a shorter time than the Slim, so it is proportionately rarer I think, four years' production versus eight?

I like the Fatboy better, but there are lots of Slim fans about. If it were me, I'd try both before commiting to a replate (either can be had for less than a single replate job anyway).

Everything above is pretty much true. Fatboys were produced for much shorter period of time thus less produced and so higher priced. A lot of people say a fatboy is about one click more aggressive than a slim (ie FB on 5 is a slim on 6). Also, people will say that the higher domed head on a FB changes the shave it gives compared to a slim. I have both but I prefer a FB even though I have large hands. One additional thing I like about the FB is that it seems to be easier to disassemble to fix/clean than a slim. Of course, this is my humble opinion. YMMV

anyone have any idea why these beauties were only produced for those few years? seems like a marketing mistake to me as popular as they are today.

This is purely speculation on my part but as with all things Gillette, they were "improving" on the FB by lengthening the handle and reducing the dome etc. Then they added plastic parts to cut manufacturing costs and so on and so on. Most likely a purely business decision based on available profits. Especially if you make it harder to fix, the consumer then has to purchase a new razor when his breaks instead of replacing a piece. Again this is all my conjecture.

I have both a slim and Fatboy. I like the way that both shave. Which you like better would depend on what you're looking for in a razor. Shave quality for me is great with both, but I tend to reach for the slim a bit more often.

I prefer the Slim but only marginally. If I had to pick one I'd definitely have a hard time choosing. I get a pretty equal shave out of both, I just think I got a better shave out of the Slim with less effort. It took me a couple of shaves to get used to the Fat Boy.
