Slight Shedding of Chubby 3?

Hey gents,

I recently received a Chubby 3 in Super from a member on this site as part of a trade. From what I've been told, it's only been used maybe 20 times before I received it. It's an incredibly dense brush which I think is the cause of this but I thought I'd ask so I can hopefully put my worries to rest. Upon the first two shaves I had with it, I've lost maybe 10 hairs or so. My Duke didn't do this however, my Polo did. So much so that the original owner thought it was a shedding problem, sold it to me for $20, I worked with it and the shedding stopped and sold it. Anyways, back on topic. Should I be worried about the Chubby or is it because it's still rather new and super dense?

There are shedders out there but based on viewing the forum, it seems that there are causes which include manufacture or usage technique. I'd give it time. Use it lightly by not crushing the knot, use a painting motion rather than circular. After 20 more user, see if the shedding subsided? I have now had several badger brushes - one was a true shedder. I'm convinced that a lot of shedding is actually breakage from the thin hairs being twisted and contorted. So I'd also look at the length of the hairs to see if they are from the base.

5 per shave for a new brush wouldn't concern me much, but I would have expected the original owner to tell me if it were shedding. It seems unlikely that it didn't before, and just now started 5 per shave.

+1 If it still continues for a week or so, then you may have an issue as it should have been doing this in the first few shaves and by the 20th shave, it should have subsided all together. Keep monitoring it and good luck.

Great advice already posted...the chubby is one of the densest brush out there and depending on the particular batch of hair, the hair can be quite thin...breaks easily if contorted, twisted or squashed. I've only seen this breakage in brushes with thin hair, need to pull back on the pressure - best way to verify if breakage is due to excessive pressure is simply to collect a few of the hair strands over a few shaves and compare them against the brush loft...if the brush is starting to shed, the hair strands are going to be long...else they'll break at the handle line. If the hair is thicker, the brush can take a fair bit of squashing abuse...it all depends on your batch with the chubbies...I've got thin haired CH3 supers along with some pretty thick haired beauties :001_tt2:

Go easy on the brush for a while and see how things go. If things persist, then write to Simpson.

No, I wouldn't be worried. New brushes often lose some loose hairs during the first couple months of use. A super dense brush like a Chubby is bound to lose some hair. I've owned shedders; your brush doesn't sound like a shedder. When a brush is a shedder, it loses lots of hairs every use. I'm sure yours will settle down after a while.

I've only had one Simpsons shedder and it is still dropping 20+ bristles a lather. At that rate it will only last another 200 years

Perfect. Glad to hear. It's an amazing brush. One of the few that actually puts a smile on my face when I use it.
