Slant?

What is the concept of the slant? It seems from what I can see that there is more blade exposure on one end of the razor than the other. How does that work? Is it better than holding my razor at 30 degrees and sliding it. I would figure my way should yield more control and I've mastered it and have great success with it.

The slant will twist the DE blade. You would use a slant like any other DE. The twisted blade will give a different angle from where the whisker will be cutted. Most Slant users will get a closer shave from that variation!

I enjoy the slant. More aggressive kind of like a razor with the Gillette Slide built in. Some people think the razor is overrated. I however, really like it.

I have a slant, but I don't really find that much of a dif. using it. Its a nice change every so often, but I think I get a better shave from my 1904.  :001_rolle

it kinda does the gillette slide for you by having the blade hit the hair like / rather than _

What about the blade exposure difference?

As long as you align the blade properly, I really don't notice the exposure difference. Not a razor for a rank newbie, you need enough control over the razor to maintain a really consisten no/negative-pressure stroke, but once you have that under control you shouldn't have any problems.

I'm intrigued by the slant and have been contemplating dropping the cash on one for a while. It seems the one DE that just about everybody raves about. Haven't got around to it yet as I'm still playing around with of all my Gillettes, but I will buy one eventually and see what the fuss is about.

What about the blade exposure difference?

There has been more (virtual) ink spilled on this than many other topics. The geometry of the slant makes it look like the blade exposure differs. It doesn't. The only way to really see the blade exposure is to look at the razor from the top just before you tighten it down. If you look at it from the "side" ie. at the blade edge, blade exposure looks uneven.

Trust me, just drop the cash and get one.. I was nervous because I bought my 37c HD Slant from a new member here because he did not like it, but once I loaded a feather in that razor it was the best shave ever in 2 passes plus touch up. Then a few months later I picked up a 39C Sledgehammer Slant and I rotate between my slants daily and once in a while I will throw the ss and slim adjustable into the mix but I continue to return to the slants because I love how they shave..

HTH,

Thanks Ontario, that's what I suspected, but my eyes kept playing tricks on me when I'd look at it from different angles.

Dont be afraid to get one! I went strait from a Fusion to a slant without many problems. Haven't tried any other DE so I don't know how it compares but nothing to be afraid of.

The slant is really nothing to be afraid of. It's probably my most effective DE, but I prefer the way a tech feels.

hi
two months back found this forum and decided to try the murkurs out.
the slant is a more aggressive shave for sure ,i have been using Gillette's for 32 years mainly tecs and a aristocrat #66..... .heads slightly loose for a really close shave .the slant needs to be tight for sure..at work i use a varied selection of ss razors and a couple of Gillette knacks normally with the head left loose to remove long hair ,DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME,:eek:not tried the slant out at work yet:w00t:.
for home now i have a merkur 1904 and a hd34c ,both excel, travel one for off on trips and now have a slant. ok the slant. it will give a very close shave ,you can hear it. have had a couple of nicks from it with a new blade, not cut oneself with a razor for quite a while . this razor requires no pressure at all to get a good shave . :smile:nearest shave to a straight you are going to get.:001_smile
rac:wink:

Same here. Follow the board tips and be rewarded with nice shaves.

though a newbie, it's my favorite so far, though it really seems to show off the differences between blades more than the HD or the Open Comb Merkurs

+1. I got one (Hoffritz, same as Merkur) and tried it. The subject's pretty well covered here. The razor's head shape essentially twists the entire blade (which isn't hard, those blades are thin), so the blade edge meets the face at a slight angle to the direction of travel instead of perpendicular, but the actual blade exposure is the same at all points. As you surmise, a slant essentially does the Gillette slide the entire time, imparting a bit of a slicing motion while retaining enough vertical motion to avoid chewing up your face like a cheese grater. I find my slant less face-damaging than a GEM, but more than a Gillette TTO or Tech. I'm sure as my technique improves, so will the smoothness.
