Skip the WTG shave on the neck?

I am thinking that doing 2 XTG shaves of the neck might be better than doing a WTG followed by 2 XTG shaves. Anyone else doing this?

The neck being a cylindrical shape has better contact with the razor when going "front to back" or "back to front".

Thoughts?

I do one "chevron" pass on my neck. That's it, no touch ups. If I go anymore I just get irritation and ingrowns. I works well for me. WTG left too much stubble a full on XTG or ATG was just bad.

Generally my neck routine is 2x passes chin-to-collar. On the third pass on my face, I touch up around my adams apple.

I tried mapping my growth patterns, strict wtg/xtg/atg shaving etc and the results were no better than just going "top down".

From your comment about your neck being a cylinder - I take it you are going to shave "around the neck". Trying this I have too many bumps and lumps, which are much more gradual if I go "top down" rather than "left to right" (or reverse for either).

I think you're misunderstanding what 'WTG' means, unless you're lucky enough to have hairs that grow strictly N-S on your neck.

For me, that side to side stroke IS with the grain on my neck.

Most of my beard on the neck is growing W-E, so I normally shave twice XTG (first N-S and then S-N) and finally I have a pass ATG.

Yea...my face and neck are the same way as Chris'. My top down passes are only about 40% with the grain, about 50% across grain, and even it seems possibly 10% against grain if you can believe it.

I have always been an advocate of skipping WTG. If you skin is sensitive, by all means shave WTG, but if it is not, why not replace the WTG pass with an XTG pass? I feel like I get closer shaves this way.

YMMV

But if your beard on the neck is growing W-E, couldn't you just turn around and then your XTG would ATG? If you would shave lying down, then it would be WTG, wouldn't it? Oops, I think I'm getting dizzy!

+1 My neck does the same thing and I do the same 3 or 4 passes on my neck as I do with the rest of my face. I just rotate them ~60 degrees to accommodate for the direction of growth.

Everyone is different, so if you've found something that works for you I'd say that you're ahead of the game. Nice going, stick with it if it does the job. :thumbup1:

I have to go up my neck to shave WTG. Going down my neck is ATG. As a result, front to back or the other way is XTG for me.

I can do ATG once in a while, but doing it 2 or 3 days in a row is a mistake. I generally stick with WTG and XTG in the neck area.

Around my adam's apple and just under my chin have a different grain direction from the rest of my neck.
