Single Edge Razor ?

Hello folks,

I own a couple SE but never dared to try :-/ You know how it is, you purchase a lot of DE and amongst them there is at least 1 or 2 Gems. What kind of shave should I expect ? How comfortable are they ?

Definitely should try. Expect a great shave.depending on the model it maybe be more or less comfortable like anything else.

At the moment, I have a 1912, a Junior and a Micromatic. (I don't include the 2 autostrop, I don't know if they use the same blades)

I get my best shaves from SE razors.

I have about 10 different models and all of them are amazing

Just got done with my SOTD (using a MMOC). Thought I would take a pic of the SE stash box that holds some of my SE razors in the shave den. I rotate in and out of this box from my storage area to get something new to use

Left side (top to bottom):

G-bar
1924
Streamline

Right side (top to bottom)

MM flying wing
1912 (British)
MMOC

Can't hardly go wrong with the 1912.

+1

I have maybe 10 SE razors including a couple of ornate early lather catchers. For just shaveability, none of them can compete with the 1912. Maybe not the prettiest razor ever made, but throw a GEM PTFE blade in the and just listen to the stubble melt away.

I agree. The best shaves I have ever had were with my Ever-Ready 1912. Be prepared though. Like you, I had a SE thrown in with a lot I was buying for the ER brush. I have been hooked ever since and it opens a whole new facet of RAD.
Best of luck with your shaves! You may find your DE's will get less use in the future.

At the moment, the only available blades I have for a SE are in a NOS pack of Goldtone, fresh from the 40's ^.^

I'd hit CVS or Walgreens or a local pharmacy and pick up some Gem SE's from there before trying to shave with the NOS ones. Just my thoughts.

....what's a Walgreens ? hey I'm Canadian :-/ I don't think walmart of the local drugstore have these or I would had spotted them for a long time.

You should pack up the GEMs and PIF them before you shave with one. Please, trust me on this.

The good - they shave really, really well. The bad, there's so many cool iterations, they're relatively cheap and relatively easy to find. So... After years of wet shaving I had four DE razors and no serious jonesing for any thing. Several weeks after my first SE shave I have twenty (holy crap!) SE razors, six more in the mail and a serious jonesing for a streamline and lather catchers...

Is there some kind of twelve step plan for LOSERS?

He speaks the truth. The SE bug bites very hard. Almost impossible to resist.

Why are the DE so much popular ? Why do I can purchase a 1912 in very good shape for less than 10 buck while a DE from the same year will cost 100$ (I have a double ring in mind) ? DE is on every lips while SE is like the second degree cousin that nobody speak of...
