Simpson

This has come up in a few threads already. My take on the situation is that there are a few subtle differences. The release of the 2 band Simpsons was something that was pretty special. The only thing I dont like about the current production is the bulb shape that most of the brush makers have moved to. I do really miss the fan shape that Simpson used in the past. I dont think its isolated to Simpson though, because Rooney has started to make a more bulbous shape as well. Overall, the new Simpsons seems to be pretty good.

thanks for that I have a new Simpson milk churn and just wondered what the difference was to the original. But I am over the moon with mine

The new Simpsons are very good brushes. I have owned both the pre-Vulfix Simpson brushes and the newer ones. Both are excellent and the new 2-bands from Simpson are very nice. I, like IsaacRN, wish there was a little less bulb-shape in the 2-band, but performance wise they are excellent.

Not to sidetrack the discussion, but I wonder what it is about this bulb shape that has become popular. I was looking at a Rooney thread on another site, and their old production had the traditional fan shape. Their current production with the new Rooney logo has a more bold bulb shape. I wonder if this is something that happens in brush making over time. They go from different shapes of knots over time.

I do think the 2 band was a great thing, and I tried to buy as much as possible. I dont know that we will see anything like it again, with Simpson having some trouble sourcing the hair. In all honesty, almost all the 2 bands were the same. There were slight differences in size, but not much. Just seemed that the handles had changed. Hopefully they can source that hair again. And as far as that goes, hopefully Rooney is able to pick up the Finest grade as well.

This needs moved to brushes.

My take on bulb vs fan is that bulb handles longer lofts a lot better (since the outer hairs (the ones who's flex makes a brush seem floppy) are set at a much shorter loft than the overall knots loft. I think they perform pretty similarly (with a bit more aggressive rub) to shorter lofted fans in my use of them.

I've only used Vintage simpson best and modern SimFix 2band super. So I really can't compare them. I found the vintage best a bit more scritchy than I like, and with the praise the wee scots, dukes, etc get in best, I suspect the best has only improved. The higher end hairs are the ones that I've heard mixed reports on (Some say little or no difference, some prefer the old stuff).

Interesting thread as I recently noticed this... I ordered a Chubby 2 Best from WCS and was surprised how 'bulbous' the loft was AND the Best grade was two-banded in coloring. I emailed John to see if it was an error, but I guess some of the higher-end Simpons are going to hte more bulb-y lofts. We got to emailing and he had this to say, which is interesting...

I've been seeing a lot of the higher end Simpson Best brushes coming in with the hair as you described. It's not quite the same as the 2-Band, because the shafts aren't as thick, so it acts more like the normal Best. But the aesthetics are different.

As for the loft, it's hard to find a Simpson brush with a fan shape, now. Even before Vulfix bought them, they were somewhere in between a fan and bulb, never a fan like Rooney. When Vulfix took over, they went even further toward the bulb shape. I haven't seen anything someone would really call a fan shape from them since we started carrying them almost 2 years ago. It's just a theory, but I think they want Simpson and Vulfix brushes to be different. Some of the lower end Simpson brushes come in more on the fan side, but not many any more.

HEre is a complaint I have with the current Simpson brand. The shaping of the brushes. In the shaping I mean that the hair is "trimmed" abnormally. They look good in the box, but when used and it blooms, it is very irregular. I have had 2 brushes do this on me, and this morning a chubby 1 super 2 band just did the same. Its irregular in shape. I dont know how this is leaving the Quality Control. Its disheartening to see something like this slipping through.

My Duke 2 purchased last year in best is fan shaped, and absolutely amazing. My two-band Ehsan is bulbous, and as such I reach for the Duke far more often.

The new Simpsons are fantastic. I rate them very highly among all brush makers, especially now that there aren't any more Rooney Finest brushes available.

I recommend the Duke 2 in Best, Tulip 2 in Super, and Chubby 2 in Two-Band.

I'll go with two of those, I don't have a T2 but I recently bought a Rooney 1/3...should have bought the T2.

If the knot is decent shape, literally, the two band Simpsons are hard to beat.

Having tried almost every single mid-size 2-band that is currently being produced...I can tell you that they are absolutely superb brushes...

What worries me is that all the vendors are having trouble renewing their simpson 2-band stock...it seems the supply line is really having issues...this happened first with the Finest by Rooney...now I fear the 2-band is heading down the same road.
