Should I try Tabac or Mitchells Wool Far soap?

Hi folks.

I'm looking at getting one of these two soaps (i'll get the other at some point probably but can only get one for now)

So far i've used D.R harris Arlington and love the scent. C&E Sienna, very nice although seems to be not as good as the arlington in terms of the shave and i've also been using the palmolive shave stick, lathers well, the scent to me is soapy and inoffensive.

I've heard so many good things about both Tabac and MWF. I think that tallow soaps are definetly going to be my preference in time.

So, which do i get? the price difference is almost negligable at the place i'll be getting it from (I believe i can't mention WHERE that is, a certain UK web shop).

I don't think there's a rule against mentioning sites as long as it's not blatant advertising, but maybe I didn't read the rules closely.

That said. Tough call. Both good soaps. You really can't make a bad choice. Flip a coin.

I find Tabac a little easier to use/more dependable.
I prefer the scent of MWF.

My face is a catchers mitt, but people with more sensitive skin seem to praise MWF for leaving face feeling nice.

If you want to try MWF, you can save some money with the re-branded Kent soap, available on their eBay shop for around $12 USD / 8 GBP / 8.9 Euro. It is the same formula as MWF, and even comes with its own wooden bowl. I've found that mixing together MWF soap and Musgo Real cream makes an awesome SuperLather. You get a double dose of Lanolin, and Tallow, to boot.

With Tabac, its available all over the place, and its dirt cheap. The problem with Tabac is that the soap alone doesn't do justice to the Tabac experience. I've found that when I really want to indulge myself, I need the whole range of products. The soap, the shave cream, the ASL, the ASB, the EdT, the DeoStick.

Think of Tabac like the instruments in an orchestra. While one instrument by itself will sound good, you need to put them all together to get beautiful music.

Tabac is a fine soap, but I like MWF much better.

There is one website that is banned here on B&B, when you type it in, it is replaced with ..........

There is really only one correct answer.

You must get both, and sort it out on your own.

Everyone's different, and the Tabac fan club here is huge, but MWF is highly regarded among the more 'veteran' shavers, and those who use straights. In fact, Joel's video on the front page - he uses MWF.

I do agree that MWF has a nice, clean scent, but Tabac's 'dfferent' scent does grow on you.

At one time, I had both. I now only have one.

Tabac is a breeze to lather . . . MWF is a little bit more work.

Tabac has a strong scent that polarizes people (some people love it and some people hate) . . . MWF has a light, almost non-existent, scent.

Price is comparable.

I like both . . .

but ultimately I prefer MWF: 1) I find the shave to be a little more comfortable (more lubricated and moisturizing); and 2) it leaves my face feeling smoother than any other soap that I have tried (while not leaving the film that Tabac does).

However, as they say, YMMV.

To address norton's message that MWF is highly regarded among people who use straights: I had never made that connection personally, nor had I read it previously, but I use straights and perhaps that has something to do with my opinion (and I can see why it would be the case).

I love tabac, its super easy to use. MWF is great too, but can be a bit of trouble to get going

Get both, you can naught go wrong!:wink2:

I've used both, and MWF wins hands down. While Tabac is quicker to get a "visual" lather, I was never able to get one that gave a good shave. It looked good, but shaved poorly. MWF lathers easily, and always gives me a great lather. And as mentioned, you can get the Kent branded stuff for a song on the ebay Kent store.

I think the idea of "building up" to a good soap is bogus. MWF is one of the best soaps out there, and the scent won't offend you, and is actually very pleasant. Buy it and don't look back.

Both provide a great shave and experience. The Tabac has a much stronger and more polarizing scent. MWF clearly wins in the skin feel/moisture department.

If you do not want avoid taking the risk of buying a shave soap which you might ultimately not like and have to get rid of, I recommend that you get a hand or bath soap of Tabac and MWF. I got myself the MWF bath soap for 5.5 € and found out that I had lanolin allergy since it gave the same type of itch as when I used to wash some clothes in lanolin soap. I was glad I did not pay 23 € for a shave soap in its dish. To get rid of the remainder of the bath soap, I'll just put it in the guest-toilet:wink2:.

Regardless if you get one of them or both of them,(they are so affordable you might as well unless you are on a very strict budget)you will end up with about a year and a half to two years worth of soap assuming you shave daily.

My ultimate suggestion is to spend a minimum of one week... maybe even one month using either or on a consecutive basis. This is truly the best way to really learn how to use a particular soap.

I like both of these soaps. They are 2 different soaps. For me MWF is more moisturizing, but a little harder to lather.

Tabac lathers extremely easy, but does not moisturize much.

Tabac is pretty moisturizing to me, but MWF just leaves my face feelling so much better. Don't need a balm after a MWF shave. That being said, I don't really like the smell of MWF at all!
