Shotgun function testing

So the range that lets me shoot what I brung only allows slugs. Can I assume proper function shooting with slugs means it will function with everything else? Intuitively I think yes, but have you guys experienced anything different? I know I will have to pattern for buckshot and birdshot.

Edit:it’s a pump

No chance to go after some clays anywhere?

Soft clay loads might not cycle where potent Slugs and SD loads will.

They closed the range down for “lead remediation” but in an anti-2a city they are dragging their feet bringing back the areas, including the skeet/trap and silhouette range.

A pump will never fail you!
You cycle the round!!

That being said: If it does happen to fail I am pretty darn sure it will be operator error.

I remember a partial double feed once that an officer managed to perform flawlessly. That shotgun was jammed tightly. I held the shotgun by the forearm and slammed the butt onto the pavement very forcefully. Jam cleared. Problem solved.
I would have never done that with my personal shotgun but it was a teaching moment with a government issued shotgun.

I belong to a couple different clay clubs and go to one or the other weekly. I get to see a lot of guns in action. A pump can get a round stuck in the chamber. Most of the time the cause is a dirty and/or a rusted chamber. I have seen them so stuck that slamming the butt on the ground won't clear them. In a few cases, I have seen guns with tight chambers that won't extract one brand or the other of cheap promo steel cased ammo.

That is something! I don’t know what to say!
I have only seen it happen once in nearly 40 years in law enforcement and over 20 years of that as an instructor. And that 1 time was definitely operator error.

I don't know if you had considered the new 1.75 in. mini shells, but they are probably not the thing to use for SD/HD. Their appeal is in being able to load more in the gun and light recoil, but they are not up to serious use standards, from what I've read. Some guns don't cycle them reliably, and they don't have enough oomph to cycle most semi-autos. The 590 supposedly cycles them fairly reliably, but there are some serious downsides.
First off is reduced payload. Shotguns work because of the massive energy dump of their multiple projectiles. These have much less.
Secondly, they pattern poorly, increasing the risk of unintended collateral damage.
Thirdly, their stubby size makes reloading more difficult.
If your thinking of using a slug version of the mini shells, you'd be better off with a carbine that handles better under stress.
If you want to shoot minis just for sh*ts and giggles, go for it, just don't depend on them for serious purposes.

This all makes sense to me.

Payload is why I love the shotty. If I could, I'd carry a nice little 4 pounder with grape shot.😁

Pump should work without issue. Now those slugs are another issue. I would be hesitant personally to fire slugs out of a light contour barrel with removable chokes. But that's just me.

Might turn the tip of your shotgun into a blunderbuss. :)
