Gents, at the teder age of 64 I remember the shoe shine shops where my dad would take me on a rare occasion. Every time I pass through an airport I tend to get a shoe shine and it always evokes fond memorys of a bygone time. If you younger gents have not had a shoe shine I would say give it a try. If you are with your son(s) why not create a memory for them, or start a new tradition.

I like going to the shine chairs mostly for the conversation. I think I do a better job than they do, but it is certainly an experience everyone should have!
Always went with my Dad while Mom and sisters were shopping. I remember the first time I climbed into the chair for a shine. Could barely reach the shoe rests!

How much does a shine cost these days? Never been myself.
There is a great one at Midway in Chicago but he is tucked down a side terminal. Older gent that does an incredible job.
Whenever I take the South Shore into Chi-town I stop & get a shine.
So they're only available in airports nowadays?
You can find them in some hotels and larger train stations, as well.
When I was a flight instructor in Pensacola in about 1967-68, a gentleman had a shoe shine "club" in our hanger. For "x" dollars, one could joint for monthly periods and receive "x" shoe shines. Forgot the amounts involved, but do recall it as a good deal! Certainly handy!
The ones I see now a days are in the financial areas of Boston. You walk into one of those large office buildings and some have shoe shine stands in them. They do a very nice job and you feel great like after a haircut.
There are many shoe repair stores in Manhattan that will still do shoe shines.

The ones I see are around $6, plus a 20% tip.
There used to be an old guy named Joe who had a stand inside the lobby of a building on Vandam between Sixth and Varick in Manhattan; gave a masterful shine. That was ten years ago, though. Nno idea if he's still with us.
Are there any good places to get a shoe shine in The Woodlands or Spring, Texas ?
I go to an old gent thats been in a carwash in Greenville SC for as long as I can remember. He charges $8 and I usually give him an extra $2. Is it ok for him to polish my macneil shell cordovan's? Is there a special polish I should be using?
Please don't let them polish shell cordovan. Just a good brushing with a horsehair brush and wipe with a soft cloth. Most shoe polishes should not be used on shell.

There is a shine guy in front of the civil courthouse in Houston. He's a dapper looking fellow and gives a good shine for $5.
