What's new

Shimming seems to be working for me.

So I ditched the r41 9 shaves ago. Since then I've gone back to the EJ89 and have been using one shim and I must say the shaves have improved. Going to try 2 shims on Tuesday. I would have to recommend it though to anybody looking for a closer shave before investing in a new razor.
Just goes to show how very true YMMV is!!!!

I use two shims in my Hoffritz slant and love the way it shaves. I coulnd't agree more, they do make a difference.

Yep. 2 shims in the EJ 89 made a nice, smooth, comfortable shaver into a closer shaver. Changed the aggression markedly.

I put three into an R41 once,... was a bit let down when i realized the odd ball angle of the R41 head doesnt really change anything no matter how many Shims you put in, and was really upset when i was cutting one of the edges off a blade and it flew into parts unknown

but i found it, when i bent down to take a picture it was right there, under my knee cap, well since the edge curled itself face up it wasnt so much under my knee as much as in my knee,

to this day im pretty sure im the only guy on the forum who has cut his knee shaving his face

the mods make me where a helmet when posting online now, its an insurance thing im told, Liability and all

but in all seriousness (althought i did kneel down on a blade for real) shimming is super easy and very effective, and its been done for almost as long as Gillette has been making his gear, they were the only way i could successfully use a tech

OK rookie here so laugh or hook me up with a link. Yes I know what a shim is, but how does it apply to the EJ89? How would you shim it? Butter? JK

Shimming is the process of trimming the sharp edge off an old DE blade and placing it under the blade you are going to shave with, before tightening everything down, effectively increasing the blade gap, even altering the angle slightly and making the razor more aggresive, usually 1 or 2 shims is sufficient.

use a SHARP pair of tin snips or even a heavy duty pair of scissors; you are only removing a couple of mm off the cutting edge of the "shim" blade. The more of the shim blade you leave the more the actual cutting blade feels supported and decreases blade "chatter" IME.

Ive known people to use them on TTOs i never thought it would work but it does,

and the last couple of blades i trimmed i did with a scissor set
