When I was using carts I always shaved in the shower. I would use bar soap or shampoo to lather my face. Never had a problem with either.

IMHO You need a good tallow soap for shower shaving. Yardley soap used to be good for that. Duke Cannon and Mysore have also worked for me.
I have but it was difficult as the soap was just way too thin and runny. It had no strength to hold up the stubble and about zero cushion. Slickness seemed ok, but it failed in everything else.
I’ve used Dove soap and other similar bath soaps occasionally for variety (Don’t ask me why!). Lathered in palm of course. Resulting shave is close but as others have stated it leaves the skin dried out a little. Makes me appreciate the soaps and creams meant for shaving!
I've never brush lathered bar soap. When I used to use carts & shave in the shower I would just rub soap or shampoo over my face & shave.
