Shaving Soaps & Wooden Bowls

My question concerns the shaving soaps that come in the wooden bowls. Are the soaps and bowls interchangeable, or are each company's soaps of such a size and shape that they are designed to fit the respective company's wooden bowls? For instance, would the soaps manufactured by T&H fit in a Caswell-Massey wooden bowl?

A bunch of them are interchangeable, but not all. For instance the D.R. Harris soaps have a flat bottom, while most of the others are convex.

I think this is a great idea. Of my soaps the T&H pucks are identical in size to the Trumper's pucks, both are around 10cm in diameter, and have the same dimple in the bottom of the puck. They look like they are both produced with identical molds. Cade is a little bit bigger at closer to 11cm, and Floris is smaller at say 9cm. I would suspect that Floris is about the same size as Pen's, but I'm not sure.

Although I almost invariably buy the OEM bowls for my soaps, when that is impossible, it's good to know that soap is very easy to whittle. My weapon of choice is an apple peeler. You can make any soap fit any bowl in a matter of seconds -- just put the peels underneath or on the sides -- they'll blend in soon enough.

About 15-20 seconds in a microwave to be exact. :biggrin1:

Bad idea for a triple milled soap, it will probably ruin the soap and make a huge mess. Most of the soaps that are sold in wooden bowls are triple milled, FYI.

Microwaving is only a good idea with glycerin melt n pour type soaps like VDH, Conk, Mama Bear, etc.

Thanks for that info, that was exactly what I was going to ask. I've done it with a glycerin soap but wasn't sure if it was ok for a triple milled.
