Another note is that during WWI, due to the absurd use of chemical weapons of the time, a clean shaven face meant the difference of having ones gas mask seal properly....life or death issues for a good shave.

Ah, good point. I used to work on radios in such places as oil platforms and refineries and would carry a disposable razor in my service vehicle (before I started wet shaving) and remember having to stop at a fast food restaurant or gas station and cold shave in the bathroom if there was a trouble call for these locations because of the safety mask issue.
