Shaving disorder?

Does anyone sometimes hide their interest in shaving in fear people will think its....well, weird?

Yeah. The few people that I have mentioned it to have called me crazy. Litterally, called me crazy right to my face.

Yes! The only two people who know about are my wife and a friend at work. My wife just rolls hers eyes and the friend at work makes fun of me. So I have told no one else.

I don't hide it, but I've gotten enough of the glazed, glassy eyed stares that I don't volunteer information to just anyone anymore, LOL

Truth is, people who have not tried it, just don't "get it", and when you talk about it, they can't make the connection in their brain between shaving and something enjoyable. Thus the glassy stares.

+1 Phil, I usually get the same glassy stares.. Although most people think I an over edge anyway as I use nothing but fountain pens as well.

LOL! Same *here* - I use nothing but fountain pens and got enough glassy stares from that to learn my lesson. Just my wife knows about the DE interest this time around.

I don't normally bring this up in casual conversation... most people wouldn't care what my personal grooming habits are. The closest I've probably come was on a recent business trip the day before we were to take part in a trial. One of the attorney's remarked on wanting to get a pedicure/manicure and needing to pick up some hair care products before going in front of the judge. These were things that helped her with her confidence. I went as far as to say that I'm the same way with shaving, so I would wake up a little earlier to take my time with it. I mentioned that I use 'old school' methods, but did not go into the finer details of including a hot towel prep, creating an uber-lather, or going with a 4 pass shave in an attempt at a BBS result.

My brother and sister think it's cool, my father used to use a gillette knack for 20 years so they're used to it. The brush and soap collection they think is a little nutty ... "but why so many?" is what I get from them. I know the AOS stores are overpriced but I love going in there to browse, it's one of the few places in the mall I am comfortable walking in actually.

Well, I don't normally bring it up either. Most people I know already find me very "different" than they are to begin with. I like them, they like me, etc., but there are plenty of other differences. So I don' go out of my way to bring up even more differences!

It always begins as a "what are you stalking about" type of thing. Then turns into them inevitably asking about razor burn and ingrown hairs because I "know about shaving". It's funny.

I don't bring it up too much either anymore. I usually let someone else do that. Mainly in the shaving supply aisle at the store where you hear all the complaints about the high cost of replacement blades. Its amazing how many people don't know that our old school method of shaving still exists.

Its really weird but those that I have told about it have embraced it. They havent embraced it like I have where they have joined the forum but they use me as a conduit of information - even though its limited but usually right on point. For me and us it stems from our barbers given us a razor hairline tape so my friends thought that they would get PFB but once there prep was changed and technique learned they were able to achieve a nice celebrity quality shave (CQS) and women respond better when our faces became clear and the age of us rolled back. Its truly a nice activity and my girlfriend even enjoys watching me and or shaving me - still working on that one. She has even ventured into buying me a shaving brush to have at her house so its not a bad thing. Share with the world all, even though I showed a few how to do it they have come back and have shown me something I didnt realize. This also all stemed from the Annie Disposable Straight with a variety of blades, to the Shavette, and the Feather AC's.

I berly started just got the Vdh bowl soap n brush from walmart.I have a SS dat i bought here off da bst . Some good guy pifed me some sample blades. She looks at me crazy, like y u wasteing ur money on that. I had a straight n dey stole it . Now all i have is a the Gillete SS . I tried to get her to shave with it but she thinks its gonna eat her up , cut her all up. Regardless someone tells me they shave with a straight ill be like . That dude is a badass. Im goint to keep on da dl.

I don't hide nor do I tell everyone about it, but when I have spoken about it I have been surprised at the responses most of which have been positive.

Most older people are interested to learn that some people are still using brushes, soaps and DE razor blades and they wonder why we are still doing it that way when there are 3, 4 and 5 blade razors that make it so much easier.

As with many things, good grooming will never go out of style.

My wife think's its harmless and does not cost lots of money so its OK, and she likes my smooth face :001_tongu.

If we get guests I hide my razors in a cabinet just in case they am not so 'normal' as they assumed ....

My mother noticed one of my my DE's (a Progress) and said: "My god, cant you afford to buy a nice electric razor? " and showed me my fathers electric razor: a shining new Philishave.

So, its nice to be a part of B&B and find those 20000 or so on earth that have shaving as a hobby.:001_smile

I haven't really talked with many of my friends about it, although most of them think that I'm crazy anyway. Most of my vet buddies are wetshavers anyway--they just use a multiblade razor and canned cream or a tube of gel. I did get a couple of my closer friends into it by striking when I sensed a moment of weakness and giving them a DE razor or a brush. Whether it's my green buddy who was happy to reduce his production of waste or my survivalist buddy who likes the idea of stockpiling anything that he can use when he ditches his identity and goes off the grid, wetshaving struck a chord.

I think it's a similar thing with traditional shaving, IMHO

I leave my brush and shiny HD in a holder next to my bathroom sink and do get an occasional question when someone new notices them. I usually explain that I like using the brush and old style razors because of a mix of history and money savings.

But I can't imagine the questions I'd get if they opened the cabinet below the sink and saw the dozens of tubs of soaps and creams, sleeves of blades and bottles of aftershaves and balms; or the drawer filled with my DE and SE razors.

love it!

Actually, this is kind of true for anything a person might have a passion about. I'm into road biking and photography as well (two other expensive hobbies.) Both of those groups are similarly outcast in certain respects ("why are you wearing those tights, and why are your legs shaven?"; "you spent how much for that flash?")

... btw, it's been a while since I've shaved my legs. It was a phase; I'm over it now :blushing:
