"Shaving before breakfast is uncivilized"?

Someone on another shaving forum pronounced this:

I think shaving before breakfast is uncivilized and I don't do it unless I absolutely must

I honestly never heard that one before. Are there other B&B'ers familiar with this conviction? Any opinions or information on it?

Apparently someone has a little too much time on their hands!!!

This is from the time a gentleman / nobleman had plenty of time. So there was no need to do it before breakfast. On the contrary: that was what the working class did, so for them it was not done. Nowadays most gentlemen / noblemen have to work for a living too, so you do not hear this one that often anymore. But it is a nice piece of history.

I'm tipping that shaving before breakfast is uncivilized, so long as making your own breakfast is also uncivilized (you'd have the "help" do that).

I don't know, I just sit in front of the TV and drink my coffee while I shave, I don't need a mirror and the tv is more interesting than looking at myself shaving. Then I get up and go find breakfast somewhere.

I usually just let my butler decide whether it's more convenient for him to shave me or serve me breakfast first on any given day.

What I consider uncivilized is folks deciding what is and what is not civilized for anyone else..

We're all different! When I was in my working mode, I was forced to shave before breakfast, if I had time for one. Now that I'm amongst the ranks of the retired, I shave when the urge strikes me... And I consider myself fairly civilized.

Although some may argue that point!

If you have kippers for breakfast - as I did this morning - then ablutions must wait until after breakfast, unless you really want to smell of smoked fish for the rest of the day.

How silly. As if your adherence to some arbitrary, made-up rule would determine wheter you are civilized (or not).

And yes, someone made that up.

Interestingly, if you google "shave before breakfast" you get some valid-sounding reasons for why you should shave before you eat.

Without naming names, I recently had breakfast at this gentleman's house. The sight of his stubble was not nearly as offensive as the stench emanating from accross the table. Apparently, showering before breakfast is uncivilized, as well. I will always defend anyone who takes a principled stance, but you may want to make an exception and put your pants on before breakfast too, as you have a hole in your underwear you can drive a truck through.

Reaaly, how silly is this?

This morning, a lovely saturday in Salt Lake City, I not only had breakfast before shaving, but also had a fine AF Hemingway cigar w/ coffee. I'm feeling so cosmopolitan.....

What about shaving during breakfast? I still have stomach churning memories of my cousin sitting at the breakfast table shoving pancakes in his mouth with one hand, while buzzing over his face with a cordless Norelco with the other hand.
