Shaving above upper lip

When shaving above the upper lip should you shave across rather than up/down or both.I get razor burn when shaving across.I saw Geofat boy do this on his sight. Thanks Joe

You should do what works best for you and your beard. No such thing as shaving rules. You will probably find you need (or want) to change your routine and razor and blade combination now and again as well. Keep it fun!

First pass downward.
Next pass, across... outside-in, with an upstroke in the center.

If my blade is fairly recently off the hones and is feeling good, I'll do a low-angle of attack upward pass, being VERY aware of any grabbing, which will lead to weepers.

Hate shaving my upper lip. I always have a shadow and I don't know how often I get asked if I'm growing a mustache. The closest I can shave it is with a downward pass and then XTG from the out in. But like you it irritates me sometimes. My father has worn a moustache for as long as I remember and he just recently told me that he does so because he hates to shave his upper lip. Ha! I can relate, but I'm NOT growing a moustache.

upper lip straight down and at a diagonal in the corners - lower lip & chin it's time consuming since to get it clean I have to go in all directions more than once .

ps I can't believe just going straight down from the nose doesn't do the trick for you on the upper - each face is unique I guess :biggrin1:

N > S, Middle > Left, Left > Middle, Middle > Right, Right > Middle. If it's a good, sharp blade, S > N to finish. If an average blade, I'll skip the last.

The Cobra Classic is the only aggressive razor I can go atg with and have no irritation or nicks. I can do it with my Jaggers, but they are very mild. I will nick myself for sure going atg with anything in-between those two. I have no explanation for why it works with the Cobra and not with other similarly aggressive razors.

First pass is north to south, second is outside to the middle and third pass is middle to the outside (with a DE; still working on getting it with the straight).

I go in all four directions - Top-down, Inside-out, Outside-in, Bottom-up (at a slight diagonal). For me, that's the only way I can even get close to BBS.

It's been my experience that doing a good job in the nooks and crannies around my mouth can make or break the appearance of a shave.

For me, I do a WTG pass and then my second pass is blade-buffing ATG.

Dang!! Blade Buffing ATG above the lip!!! You da man!!!

I blade buff there as well but WTG or East-West-East . Smaller, slower and lighter stroked using the silo doors to spread the lather back on each pass.

I do more or less the same thing, and I'm trying to add a little blade buffing as well. Above the upper lip is the only place I really care about BBS. I have dark whiskers and very fair skin, and it looks terrible if I don't get it extremely close above the lip. It's actually the most frustrating thing for me about learning to DE shave.

With a DE I do N/S, then across from the middle to the outside, then S/N. With a straight I do the same, except I do an outside to the middle pass, instead of S/N. Not brave enough for the "sphinx maneuver" just yet. :biggrin1:
