Shave-Ready Straight From Antique Shop??

Well, I've never had this happen before...

I checked out the straights at an Antique shop this weekend. Most were garbage, but then there was this Boker King Cutter. It had notable hone wear, but the edge looked pretty good. Scales were fine, blade nice and snug and centered perfectly.

When I picked it up and felt the edge, I couldn't believe it. I thought, "Wow, it won't take much to get this shave ready." Nice surprise.

So I took it home, prepared to touch it up. My first step was to examine the edge under magnification. It looked great, all the way from toe to heel. Incredible.

I simply gave it a thorough stropping, and it passed the HHT all along the edge. Shocking.

Shaved with it this morning and my face still feels smooth. Whoever owned this razor previously really knew what he was doing.

I never thought I'd find a shave-ready vintage straight in an antique shop!

Good find.
It definitely isn't common to find a shave-ready razor in an antique store, at least, every razor I got from antiques or flea markets needed to start from the 1k hone.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day...

I've gotten one razor off of Ebay which came to me shave ready. It was an old, dusty Wostenholm. Under the dust and a light layer of crud, was a nearly pristine, shave ready razor. Whoever sharpened that one really knew what they were doing.

Those stones give one of the smoothest finish!

Yes, it sure does. I haven't used it on this razor though. (Here, the stone just serves as a pretty backdrop.)

The razor is perfect (to me) as is. I'm very curious what the previous owner honed it on. And when!

I haven't had the pleasure of shaving with a King Cutter myself. They are reputed to be mighty fine shavers and I'm not surprised this one delivered a good shave with minimal touch up. Nice find!!
