Shapton glass backing to hold lapping film

My lapping films arrived from G-ina. It only took 11 days order-to-door.

I plan on using the glass backing of my Shapton glass stone. i.e. the stone upside down in a stone holder. The glass feels smooth to me and the grit printing is on the other side (ingenious!).

Is there any problem with this strategy?

I only have one Shapton glass stone 1000#.
Just checked and it's a little convex lengthwise, not much.

Sidewise not convex or concave, rather flat.

Atoma diamond plate or DMT is very flat also on the back side, especially the DMT's.
My guess is the Shapton will work fine though.

And you will have the possibility to end with a flat finishing hone, perhaps perfect.

Atoma plates and DMT plates are often very not flat on the back and sides.

Most of my Glass Stones are in the same boat.
Me, I would just use the Shapton's working surface because I know it is for sure dead flat.

Moral of the story - never assume based on what someone else's experience is said to be.
Always check/verify flatness with a qualified straight edge.

12X3 glass tiles are $4 at Lowe’s, they are not flat, but can be flattened easily with a sheet of 220 Wet & Dry.

220 will leave a nice matt/frosted finish that the film sticks onto better. If you have 2 or 3 different plates you will not need to switch film and can have different grits ready to go, great if honing more than one razor.

Don’t forget to use the paper trick for your final laps to add a micro bevel, works great.
