Service Set razor question

I got this pretty nice Service Set without the razor, but I have plenty of homeless ball end Old Types.

In fact, I have a "Property of US Army" SN: J5104 that I was going to put in there and then I saw on Achim's site that there is just any old ball end Old Type in the Service Set. So what exactly would an Old Type marked US Army go in? Probably not the ornate Service Set, eh?

Isn't that the officer set, and wasn't there a khaki set for the enlisted men?

I know that there are other khaki sets, and I have seen a blue set which has Navy on it. Maybe the khaki lined service sets were army and the blue navy?

I believe the "Property of US Army" are only in Khaki sets

+1 and only in Khaki Sets marked as Army property. Sets marked made in USA were marketed to the civilian community. For example:

I have two of these Service sets and two Khaki sets that came with very nice nickel plated ball end Old Types. I don't know if Gillette made all the sets with nickel plated razors but most that I have seen do. Even my Officer's Military set came with a nickel plated Bulldog.

Are all the ball end Old Types nickel plated? Or was there a cross over point? I didn't see anything in the Wiki. I noticed that my Single Rings (which I know are silver, they all cleaned up with aluminium foil method) all have better plating then most of my ball end OTs. Luck of the draw?

the most ball end Old Types are silver or gold plated. I believe only the Military set´s like Khaki, Navy, Service Set´s are nickel plated.

I think that Gillette nickel plated the military set razors because of the added abuse they would get out in the field and in the trenches. It does make a beautiful looking razor.

so most likely my J series (one with Property of US Army and one without) are nickel plated?

Wish I had a Star Trek TriCorder, but the next best thing is the B&B!!
