What's new

Seeking brush recommendation

Hi, i want to buy a new brush and the ones i currently have are Edwin Jagger best badger and a cheap silvertip brush. My price range is 40-60$ and i would like to get a stand with that if possible. I face lather and have dense, thick hair on the chin and upperlip if that helps.
Thanks

Take a look at the offerings from Bob Farvour (in the Hobbyist section). He's got some great brushes, and you can customize your own specs for the knot size and loft. From my experience, the artisan brush makers we have available (Bob, Rudy Vey, etc.) have much better offerings under $100.

Face lather: 2-band Finest 24mm knot at 50mm or 26mm knot at 53mm...face-lathering heaven!

Good Luck

I also have the EJ in best sized medium. What changes (or improvements) would you make to the EJ?
density? backbone?

For me, the EJ is simply too large for my preference, but it works fine otherwise. I prefer my 16mm brushes.

I just got a sivlertip from Whippeddog (22 set at 45) and love it for face lathering! Larry has a number of handle options available.

I just picked up a Wet Shaving Products brush on BST. I am enjoying it. And they have a few new models coming soon

+1 You should also consider the Semogue boars such as the SOC, 830, 610, 620 etc.

Thanks for all the replies they have greatly helped :)

To be honest I don't know I am so inexperienced when it comes to brushes.

I couldn't find those sizes for the silvertip knot at whippeddog's site should I just put in the sizes in the comment section before/after purchase?

Alot of these posts are about custom made brushes which look really nice but as i'm so inexperienced when it comes to brushes I just have no idea what size I should get and what kind of a knot(preferably for face lathering).

The Simpsons Berkeley 46 looks great and is in my price range and it's in England(i'm in EU) so Shipping won't be much.

Could anyone help me out with the prefered sizes/knot for face lathering i'd appreciate it as I love some of these handles on whippeddog.

Thanks

It's really impossible to give recommendations if you can't indicate the direction(s) you're looking to go. Like anything else, brush selection is subjective/YMMV so recommendations are not a one-size-fits-all matters. Surely you've found things that you like and things that you dislike about your EJ?

Again, subjective/YMMV. "Smaller knots and shorter lofts for face lathering" is commonly parroted but my favorite brush for face lathering has a 28mm knot and 57mm loft. You have to determine where your preferences lie and shop based on those preferences -- not just what's popular.

Spend more, get a Morris and Forndran
More $$ != better and I'm saying that as a person whose favorite brush is an M&F. However, definitely try out the options. Yet again, this is a highly subjective/YMMV matter.

Choose a knot.

Choose a handle.

Select "brush assembly"

They build it/send it...I've got a 24mm Finest on it's way in a nice butterscotch handle; all up about 60 bucks.

Whippeddog will set the loft to whatever you want. They charge $5 for the custom setting. When I ordered mine, I simply emailed what I was looking for and they replied back with a price and payment instructions.

Thanks again for all the responses :) i'll be making my order from whippeddog asap and maybe in the future get a Morris and Forndran.
