Scuttle?

If you could buy a scuttle what kind would you get? Dirty bird, Moss, or Georgetown. I've been wanting one for some time and cannot decide on which one to get for some time. I'm in desperate need of warm lather. Thanks in advance for the help!:thumbup1:

I can't speak for the other brands because I only have a Dirty Bird, but I can tell you that I love my DB scuttle. Based on the reviews of the others that I have read, they all seem to be great scuttles. Good luck in choosing. It is money well spent.

I did a lot of research and asking questions about scuttles over the last few months ... I decided on the DB Brush Scuttle and matching Lather Bowl.

I placed my order on the website today, and received an almost immediate reply from Julie ... not a standard form-letter, but a personally written note in my inbox.

My scuttle is already made, drying out right now, waiting to go into the kiln ... I should get it in about a week.

After a year of trying to make do with jury-rigged solutions and improvised gear, I'm finally going to have a real scuttle and lather bowl ... equipment that was designed from the ground up for that purpose and that purpose alone.

I can hardly wait!

Moss with mixing bowl is what I go back to all the time. The right mixture of size and super good material. It is pricey but if I were you I would buy and then sell if you do not like it. You seldom see them on sale here and I figure that when someone uses one they don't want to get rid of it.

Take Care,
Richard

It was this thread that sealed the deal for me.

I was leaning toward a DB anyway, and this product in particular, but after reading the unanimous "10" reviews, it was an easy decision to pull the trigger.

I was originally going to wait until mid-July and get this as a birthday present to myself ... but I got tired of waiting. Besides, it will play a key part in a certain "Theme Shave" I'm planning.

Thanks David, I was leaning towards a DB, my brushes are kinda large I got a saville row 3824 and a 24mm knot Shavemac. I'm hoping this bowl is large enough for bowl lathering.

I'm hoping so, too ... I use the B&B Essential and I measured it against the posted dimensions of the brush scuttle. It will be a snug fit, which should be good for heat transfer.

The lather bowl has ridges on the bottom, but I don't think it is ridged on the interior sides. I don't think this will be a problem, though.

I'm currently building lather with a dinner plate that has a ridged bottom, and I find that I can develop a good lather quite quickly by using the brush in an up-n-down pumping motion. Going around in circles doesn't seem to make much difference, except to scoop up lather and bring it back into the middle.

If the brush scuttle does turn out to be too small for your brush, you will have no problems selling it here in the BST. And DB makes a 1.5x and 2x size one-piece scuttle that should fit even the most monstrous of brushes.

My only experience is with the Dirty Bird scuttle, and I really, really love that thing ! I ordered the 1.5 size with vertical and horizontal stripes. Julie is a real pleasure to work with, and it only took about three weeks until I had it in my grubby little hands. This scuttle will keep your lather warm as long as it takes you to complete your shave and with all the extra room it can help you create a mass of lather ! I use hot tap water only about ten minutes before I start to shave and don't add any more when I do start to shave. Don't get me wrong it's a bit on the heavy side but it certainly will give you a very warm and very luxurious shave. I can tell you now that if something happens to this scuttle I'll order another one in an instant !

I warm my lather on the cheap by putting hot water, very hot water, in the sink then put my bowl in that. It keeps my lather warm for 2 or 3 passes, which is what I use. Would probably have a scuttle if I had room on my counter.

David, what is your process for heating your lather using this DB? I'm kind of interested in how the lather will stay warm in the lather bowl once lather has been made. Does the lather bowl remain on the bottom of the brush scuttle to keep the heat?

I haven't heard of a DB. Who makes them?
I ordered a Moss scuttle and lather bowl from Sara Bonnyman. She added a cobalt blue version and that pushed me over the edge. I had also picked a "waterfall" bowl, but she told me she also had them in the cobalt blue but they weren't listed on the site. Both are beautiful!

jbake37, The latherbowl is superfluous in my opinion. I have one with my DB brush scuttle. It's a nice piece and I use it to store some random stuff like a alum block.

However; a brush scuttle is just for face lathering and isn't usefull for bowl lathering. It works beautifully and I never shave without it

So If I bowl lather I may be screwed on the scuttle thing. MMMMMMM! Maybe I should get into face lathering.

I bowl lather with a 1.5x DB. Its about 4.25" in diameter and about 2.5" deep. Plenty big for my purposes.

I plan on purchasing a Schwarzweisskeramik this summer. I don't see why this scuttle never gets any mention...

It gets mentioned, usually in terms of how expensive it is.

Granted, its a work of art, but I ruled it out early on in my scuttle-hunt because of the price.

Db is a Dirtybird pottery company that comes highly recommended on this site for scuttles. I want to get one today. It's itching me.

A brush scuttle is for face lathering, almost any other scuttle for bowl lathering. But a normal scuttle can be used for face lathering too.

I also have a large Schwarzweisskeramik. It is a work of art and not that expensive. But I have to add that postage from germany to The Netherlands is alot less import from the US (where the DB is sold). We also don't have to pay importtaxes for countries within the EU.

Schwarzweisskeramik: Heavy and very well build. Don't drop it in the sink because it will break the sink. Builds lather like a dream, but it's too heavy to use handheld.
