What's new

Scent Bar run

Couldn't steer away from the Scent Bar today and now sporting a bottle of Idole by Lubin. Went for the EdT version. Been kind of digging Bay Rum lately and this seems like a contemporized version. May be too sweet for some Bay Rum lovers.

tried an interesting new one the manager was touting. They just got it two days ago. Bois d’Ascese Eau de Parfum by Naomi Goodsir. WoW...this was intense and interesting. Can't figure if it's right for me yet. Dark, heavy, smokey, smokey opening. Campfire. Whiskey notes. Cinnamon. Tobacco. Soamalian incense. Brings to mind Tauers Lonestar Memories but inital impression much more potent. May consider when the depth of SoCal winter hits.

i could see this being a hit with some guys here. Still kind of bouncing around in my head right now.

Bois d’Ascese Notes
tobacco, whiskey, cinnamon, amber, cistus labdanum, oakmoss, smoked cade wood, Somalian incense

I tried one of the Lubin scents...maybe the same one and I recall liking it a lot. That second one sounds very good - esp the comparison to the Tauer. I need to try it.

I really need to try the Idole by Lubin. Why the EdT over the EdP? Surprised me.

Bois de Ascese sounds interesting too. Shocked to hear it described as more potent than Lonestar Memories. LM packs a punch

Well Bill, weighing out a variety of reviews from people I trust, it's pretty split. I can't give you one definitive answer. Some think they are very much alike and the EdP lasts longer. But many think the EdP is a bit of a different scent with less of a range. Some think the notes are richer in one over the other. The EdT is the original and is a smaller bottle (75ml) with a smaller price. I won't just chalk it up to being thrifty, but that played a part...especially the smaller bottle. I have taken a liking to Bay Rum lately and this is not truly a Bam Rum scent, but it's in the neighborhood.

Yeah the Bois de Ascese made quite an impression. Maybe I'm caught in the moment of it, but it was a very pronounced smokey incense open that me back up and go - Whoa! I felt like my face was stuck into a campfire. Will have to sample wear at some point to see how it drys down...intersted in seeing how the whisky, tobacco and cinnamon come to play. The manager of Scent Bar has been wearing it a couple of days and was quite smitten with it. He's a pretty good judge of scents for sure.

I've never smelled Lubin Idole. How does it compare to Kilian STraight to Heaven, which is also considered a rum scent?

Haven't tried the By Killian so not sure. Having tried some By Killians, I'd guess the Idole is a lot lighter wearing scent. Wearing it right now, and it is not as strong as the By Killians I have sampled. The perfumer who created it, Olivia Giacobetti, known for her light touch with scents. The whole "transparent" fragrance thing.

I'm liking it but will probably be second guess the decision not to get the EdP version before end of week. Will be good for work though. clean, spicey...Nice scent, and more discreet than much of what I wear.

The Bois de Ascese sounds like one I would like a lot if the cinnamon gives it just a bit of sweetness. Sometimes, like in Aramis JHL, cinnamon is dry and that's okay, too. Stylin, you were the first to point out that I have a "sweet tooth" in my frag preferences, and you were right.

I prefer the Lubin EdT over the EdP because to my nose it has a little more "bite", where the EdP may be a little smoother and even slightly more elegant, but I just like the other better. But that's not unusual for me, as I also prefer the EdT versions of Terre d' Hermes (I like the sharp flinty note) as well as Habit Rouge.

I also have a big preference for frags with staying power, and the EdT versions of all those I mentioned last longer than average on my skin.

Thanks for reporting on the Bois de Ascese, Stylin', I'll have to try that one.

Also, Schad, it's been a while since I tried Straight to Heaven, but it impressed me as more having a woodsy, slight patchouli, slightly fruity vibe with a smooth sandalwood type drydown. It didn't remind me of Idole at all.

Yes, give it a wearing and Let us know. I must say, it was only a couple minutes of opening notes, but I sure didn't get much hint of sweetness. I get woozy looking at the notes profile though.

I agree re the similarities. It's been quite some time since I have tried either of them, but I don't recall any similarities. I know I prefer the Lubin. The Lubin EdP is on my to-try list and I'll have to revisit the EdT since it's been so long since I first tried it.

While I like the EdP version of Idole better than the EdT (the EdP is richer), the EdT has a better range of notes and is a bit more interesting, in my opinion. I can easily understand your decision to get that over the EdP. If I had to choose one over the other I would do the same. You get all the same qualities of the EdP but with just a little more of the booziness.

That Bois d’Ascese Eau de Parfum by Naomi Goodsir sounds really good too! I see one of Naomi's other scents is centered around leather ... hmm, might be a line to check out. Damn!
