What's new

Satellite radio

I have it, and love it. There is a large variety of stations, so you're bound to find something you like, as opposed to terrestrial radio, at least in the NYC area. If you call them you should be able to talk them into paying about 1/2 the normal price, $77 for the year (plus taxes and fees).

I have had XM for 2 years now. It was a requirement for my new vehicle, as was a manual transmission. Listening to Jazz, Classical, Sinatra, etc. is so nice. I live in a semi-rural area and the FM choices are country, country, or country. The only downside to XM is they made the 40's station available only on internet radio. Shame about that.

The current Billy Joel channel on the 40's station's usual slot expires shortly, so hopefully it comes back.

I have had Sirius for 4yrs now and love it. My commute is about 30min each way. I timed the local stations and figured out I was listening to about 14-18 min of commercials in the morning . Especially with the new advertising format of running there spots coming back on the air for 1-2 min and going into another commercial break for more time. So give or take it costs me .50 a day not to hear commercials. No problem here on that one. I could use my phone if I wanted but there is no way I could have that many styles and types of music or talk on it.

This is correct. The Billy Joel Channel will run until June 25, I believe, then 40's on 4 will return. I love big band swing, but I also love Billy Joel, so I'm a little sad about it.

I've had a Sirius radio for several years and I used to love it but quality took a serious nose dive when they merged with XM. I still keep it as I share the account with my mother and she listens to it a lot.

It is just okay. Much like cable TV, I find myself constantly looking for something I want to hear. There's no station I truly enjoy but rather a handful of "shows" that I like.

I have it in my shop and listen to about 2 stations. As for my truck I refuse to listen to all the constant chatter. Really the DJ's are not that interesting or funny. I drove 18 miles to work the other morning and not one single song was played. Terestrial radio is free and you get what you pay for IMHO

My opinion on satellite radio (I have Sirius in my car). It seems to be overrated. My car also has a UPS port and line-in. I can play any and all of my personal music collection just by putting it on a flash drive. And my daughter can just plug in her MP3 player or her smart phone. That way, my daughter or I can listen to exactly what we want and not just a genre from Sirius. And I even have the option of Pandora. So I see no reason to ever renew my Sirius subscription.

My Jeep came with a 6-month trial subscription to Sirius XM, and I subscribed at cost when it renewed. My top 4 are Margaritaville, Comedy Central, Faction (mostly punk rock), and Vivid Radio (pornstar talk radio- it's freaking hilarious). I normally wouldn't pay for such a thing, but it's well worth it. Certainly beats the AM/FM selections around here; all saccharin-soaked pop crap and country (which I cannot listen to without suffering hemorrhages from the ears). The deciding factor was when the hard classic rock FM station went to modern hard rock; that was the last straw.
Most of the channels are hit-or-miss as far as programming, but some of the DJ's are worth listening to. It's kind of funny when I hear a song on XM Faction, then hear it nearly a year later on FM pop radio as an "edgy new single".
