Sat night rant- paypal

I have been thinking about this for some time. (REALLY) PayPal is owned by The Bay. They make lots of money. We as sellers and buyers in the BST forum are directed to not charge moneys in excess of our costs and shipping charges.
I agree. I also feel that when you send payment for shaving products to members of B&B who are in compliance with the stated directives you can without guilt use the PERSONAL tab. I would suggest that you also use the "other" tab and not the "gift" tab. The "other " tab is IMHO more honest than the "gift" tab. Also remember that when sending payment in the "personal" tab your shipping address is not included to the recipient of your "personal", other, remuneration.
What do you all think?

As Gruber/Chad pointed out to me, this actually violates the Paypal terms of agreement. While I definitely wish people would chose to use the personal/gift tab so I'd save some fees, asking for people to use it does open B&B and it's mods up to allowing PP to be mis-used. It also leaves folks without recourse if something goes wrong. While I've never had problems and feel B&B is filled with trustworthy guys, there have been problems in the past. :frown:

I personally hate PP and their money grubbing ways, but the only way to get around the fees would be to ask for a gift card to be sent to you from a store you use as opposed to using paypal. It amounts to the same thing and violates no agreements.

This is why I don't recommend the personal payment option. At least if you show it as a purchase for goods you have PayPal protection.

As we always say the BST is Caveat Emptor through and through. SNAFU's are rare but they have happened.

From our helpful B/S/T Tips thread:

"For those using PayPal, understand that "personal" payments afford you no dispute resolution protection from PayPal. We highly recommend that all B/S/T PayPal purchases be made as payments for "goods" or "services".

Sincere thanks to chainfire and lots of other folks for following this one and helping keep B&B as fraud-free as possible! If you haven't checked out the tips thread in its entirety (or haven't looked at it in a while), you may find that couple of minutes to be time well spent.

As for the OP's concern about paypal raking in money hand over fist, +1. :cursing:

I didn't realize that the personal option violated PayPal rules. Will have to reconsider. Does B&B have a policy on this?

I have reviewed the PayPal terms of agreement. I find no reference to this issue. Can you please direct me to the applicable terms. I have however read this B&B directive.

yeah, but doesn't the buyer have to pay the fees if they use personal/gift and since it also offers no protection the buyer is getting the short end of the stick.

If I sell something I have no problem paying the fee, no matter how much money paypal makes, they are providing a useful service that offers convenience when selling and some protection if I am on the buying end.

B&B DOES NOT recommend the personal payment option. We take no responsibility for, and obviously cannot police what two adults agree to privately, but I personally would not engage in any transaction which was contingent on the funds being processed as "personal" for the sake of avoiding fees.

We understand that fees can be very bothersome. Agreeing to "split" the fees between the two parties or considering the fees when you price your item are certainly OK. But please keep in mind the the BST is not meant to be a profit-driven ebay replacement. For some, passing on an unwanted piece of shaving gear to a fellow B&B-er might be worth possibly eating a few bucks. And offering buyers the benefit of protection, regardless of how prolific and respected you might be here can never be a bad thing. These are the sort of mindsets we definitely want to encourage.

This thread could reasonably be about one of my recent transactions, so I'll chime in.

I would and have paid a higher amount for an item when the buyer specifies that paypal credit payment will cost an additional fee. I used to not think twice about it, but I got burned once and refuse to leave myself without protection from it happening again. As much as I consider a lot of the people here and other places I frequent online gentlemen, the reality is that they are strangers. I got burned by a guy who had a ton of posts and over a year as a member. I sent personal payment and he was a ghost.

If this is about my transaction, please contact me and we can work something out. I don't like leaving people with a bad taste in their mouth about selling things to me, but I do like to protect myself.

In light of the current B&B policy and that of PayPal, I retract my opinion posted as the thread starter. I will in the future not ask any payment for goods as a personal payment. Unfortunately the costs of exchanging shaving items will go up a bit. To a previous poster: Ya rule breaking is good at times, however in this matter the wishes of B&B must IMHO be respected.
