Samples in magazines

What is with those folded over pages in magazines with samples of frags? I've tried a handful and they all smell unpleasant.

What am I actually smelling? The top notes? The top notes mixed with magazine paper smell?

Do these actually help anyone find a frag?

Suspect top notes mixed with magazine paper smell, but no definitive proof. My impression is that they all smell alike; wouldn't buy any of them based on magazine samples and probably wouldn't if smelled from the bottle.

It is also mixed with the adhesive smell holding the magazine fold together. Magazines smell funky to begin with. A total mess.

Esquire seems to have a preponderance of these. I resist as long as I can and always regret my unsatisfied curiosity.

I know exactly what you mean!

I have to say though, I did discover perhaps one of my best perming AS balms in a magazine. They had a complete sample of L'Oreal's HydraSensitive MenExpert 24Hr hydrating balm in ShortList, a well-known magazine in London. The minute I tried that on, even though I hadn't shaved, I knew it would be good. And I was right.
