What's new

Rotterdam

Looks like I'm heading to the Netherlands for a week and a half next summer (mostly business, but what happens in Amsterdam stays in Amsterdam ). Anyways, most of my time will be spent in Rotterdam, and I was wondering how hard it will be to walk into a store there and find cool stuff like Tabac, Irisch Moos, and other supplies that we on this side of the pond don't see in brick and mortar stores.

The Dutch Shaving Shop... recently ordered three sticks of Moos from them.

I think you are going to be in luck. The netherlands seems to have some good and easily obtainable shaving supplies. Pick yourself up a Palmolive shave stick. They are great.

That's not the only supplies they have there that are easily obtainable!:biggrin:

Have a great time over there.

I remember when I was in Amsterdam for a few days back in 1970. I was stationed in Germany with the Air Force, and spent 3 days in Amsterdam on a leave. I was 21 yrs. old then, and what a good time was had there, but that's another story.:w00t:

I am also interested to buy shave items in the Netherlands.
Where do you buy stuff like Proraso, Musgo etc cheap?
(Cheap = well under web site prices + shipping.)

/Alexander

My brother works for a Dutch based company and has made several trips to Amsterdam;he speaks highly of those shops with the (ahem) ladies in the window.

Indeed, indeed...Red Light District is a typical walk for tourists but sometimes what you see at the window is not what you get inside...:001_tongu

Jan Pieter, I took a look at the website and it looks like a great place to get a str8 shave, but do they sell products as well? (Didn't see that on the site)

If you can find the time there you really should; it is a wetshaving paradise with stuff stashed in every corner and check out Paul's website too!

Though you can find the Tabac shave stick in most drugstores and Palmolive in some you will find the Netherlands a barren wasteland for classic shaving products and you really need to go to one of the very few 'special' shops to find some interesting stuff.

Have fun anyway here!! :001_smile

It seems like they do, if you click on '08 [Products]' it says:

ACQUA DI PARMA
AMERICAN CREW
FLORIS
GEO. F. TRUMPER
CARTER AND BOND
MASON PEARSON

Also a well sorting shaving brushes, open razors, shaving soaps etc. Visit our webshop.

The webshop is not functional yet, though.

We were in Amsterdam recently and during a quiet Sunday morning stroll I found a chemists shop (pharmacy?) in one of the back streets between the (ahem) street of negotiable affections and St. Stephens Square and it was packed to the rafters with every aftershave / cologne I've ever wanted to try. The prices were good (if not exceptional) but the choice was phenomonal, far far better than any of the big stores there or in London.

My credit card took more of a beating in 30 minutes there than it had in the previous 3 days drinking, eating and clubbing

Visited Amsterdam several times. I like the place as most people speak far better English than my Dutch! Last time I visited a couple of years ago I went with my son (age 33) as he was planning a move to Australia and wanted to try the "Coffee" shops out before he went.

Not my scene but a lot more pleasant that I expected! Only partook of the coffee. left the Jamaican Woodbines to my son. We visited a few and most seemed full of giggling Americans!

How are the coffee shops getting on with the indoor smoking bans? Are they still going?

Back to the shaving, I bought a load of Tabac soap while I was there.

I was born in Rotterdam, I work in Rotterdam and I live in a town very close to Rotterdam. I guess that makes me pretty much an authority on this subject  To answer your question; Tabac is available in most drugstores but look especially for one of the 'Etos' drugstores, they carry the complete line and have somewhere around 8 stores in the city centre. They also carry the complete De Vergulde Hand line (like almost every supermarket and every drugstore). Palmolive is easy to get too, most supermarkets and drugstores carry that one as well. Most drugstores and supermarkets also carry a Gillette brand shaving cream (I never used it though). Many local supermarkets run by Turkish immigrants also carry Arko but you will not find those in the city centre.

Hope this helps
