Rookie looking for a good DE blade

What would be a nice brand of blades to go with for someone who is just getting serious about shaving and is using a DE89? I don't want to cut my face off but I do want to sharp razor for a close shave. I am currently using the Derby blades that came with my razor purchase.

The most sensible advise in my opinion is to try as many blades as possible before you buy a specific blade in bulk. A sample pack might be your best option for this.

The way we experience blades differs so very much from person to person it is almost unbelievable. Yet this is something that is always confirmed over and over again. YMMV it is often called which stands for your millage may vary.

There are dozens and dozens and dozens of good blades available. Your best bet is spending some time reading reviews and discussions in this forum, then buy a few that sound good to you.

I guess there are sampler packets out there. Most people who will respond in this forum will reply personal preference and YMMV meaning "your milage may vary.
I happen to have the same razor, with a different handle.
I found that once I got my technique down right, I could go right to Feather blades, until the other day when I varied my routine & technique...I found out how sharp those blades can be. I have some Astra SPs on the way now. Good luck and happy hunting.

I have enjoyed a few blades but you may not enjoy the same ones I do, so go to some place like WCS and order a couple different 5/10 packs and make your own sample pack

I would suggest, Astra SP, feathers, Gillette blue, gillette green stainless, gillette black, gillette yellow, Personna Lab blues, Gillette Silver Blue, Pol-silver, Personna Platinum (red pack)

Those are some of the most highly regarded blades on B&B and WCS sells them all, try them all and see which one suits your face/budget, then you can start buying bulk of the ones you like the most

A sampler pack is the best way to go. There are a few vendors that offer them, each containing something a little different. My only advise to you is to get the largest sampler pack that your budget permits. I did not, and I missed out on some great blades (Lord Platinums, Shark SC's, Gillette 7 O'Clock blacks & blues) at first. Here's my idea of a good sampler:

Astra SP
Red Pack Israeli Personnas
Shark Super Chromes
Lord Platinum Class
Gillette 7 O'Clock blacks (Indian)
Gillette 7 O'Clock blues (Russian)
Personna Lab Blues
Derby Extra (these seem to work good in more aggressive razors, YMMV)
Feather (save this one for later, but at least try it at some point)

Send me a PM with your info, and I'll get you some Astras to try, and maybe even one or 2 others for fun.

Thanks gentlemem for the advice on blades. I defintely gonna have to go with a decent size sampler pack after hearing all of this.

+1 Try out a bunch, using your favorite soap consistently. If your only variable is the blade, you'll soon learn which gives you the closest shave. Remember that over time your technique improves, so don't be afraid to go back and retry brands that disappointed you early on. Good luck. Enjoy your saves!
