I was just talking about him earlier today in the Dylan thread. I was never able to see him perform. Ugh. This is a tough one to process. Many, many blessings I have received from his music over the years. May he rest in peace.
His music meant so much, and was woven deeply into the Canadian national psyche after all these decades. Good memories of hearing Carefree Highway nearly every morning on the crackly AM radio of a freezing cold school bus. The long bus ride just wasn't right somehow if that song wasn't played. So very fortunate that I got to see him play a couple of times at Massey Hall.
Not one of his most famous songs, but probably my favourite. Just the opening lines really move me.
He was standin' by the highway
With a sign that just said "mother"
When he heard a driver comin'
'bout a half a mile away
Then he held the sign up higher
So no decent soul could miss it
It was ten degrees or colder
Down by bolder dam that day
His "Song For a Winter's Night" is something to behold. It reminds me of a long ago time, place and a very special woman. No one can paint a melodic picture like him. R.I.P.
Not sure if you're familiar with Rick Beato but I thought he would be talking about Gordon Lightfoot today and he did. Fans of Gordon might enjoy watching this.
