Rings on Brushes?

I've notice that some brushes come with either a plastic or metal ring around the base of the knot, secured to the top of the handle, and some do not. Do these rings serve and practical function or are they purely decorative?

Ya.... perhaps some practicality on a wooden handle, maybe even on a bone handle.

Acrylic/plastic/stone/ceramic? Purely cosmetic.

This "ring" in case of the Semogue brushes is actually the crimped upper edge of a metal cup where the hair is set in. Some companies set their hair in these cups and then into the handle. The Omega boars knots are held in a black plastic sleeve. Most people do also not know that Kent sets their hair in either a plastic sleeve or one made from stainless steel (but it is completely hidden inside the handle). I have removed my share of Kent knot, these soft, floppy mops, and set into a new handle at a loft so they can be used for face lather.
Other companies, like Shavemac, Simpson, Rooney and M+F set their hair directly with in the handle.

I was playing with a Kent brush recently at a local shop and wondered why the loft was so bloody high--it seems way too much even for bowl lathering.
