Review of the feather AS-D1

Forward:
I received my feather AS-D1 that i bought off from a fellow B&B'er (thank you again sir) the mail on thursday I cleaned it up.
I have wanted to try out this enigma of a razor for a long time I saw a pic online and said "wow" It was love at first sight. Then came the research a review from shaving 101 I had a heart attack when I found out the price. Hopefully looked on ebay for a cheap one ( boy i was kidding myself) only to see a cheap one for 160. Knowing I would never really have the cash or the will to part with the money for a new one I dismissed the thought of owning a feather. Inter B&B's B/S/T
I hit the "what's new" button on the forum and what did I see a barely used feather I looked for fun people were talking up the razor and what a good deal it was.

I figure this may be my only chance to at least try a feather I could sell it off if I didn't like it and maybe make a few extra bucks on the side. While I was waiting for it to come I did some more research online saw the horror stories of how many people were disappointed in this razor my heart sank as I knew I would be another victim of its sirens song.
Ok tonight was the night for the as-d1 swimbo wanted to go out to eat. I worked overtime this week all I want is sleep. After a week aol from a razor I needed to look like a civilized person. Now after reading all the postings/reviews on the the Internet I got the feather down pat. for experiment's sake and to see just how well it does when one mishandles this razor. I needed a shave quickly as I could. Apologies to the experienced shavers before hand. And to newbies a warning this is not how to de shave. Keep in mind folks this razor angle is a bit narrower ( the handle needs to be held more of an angle outward than most razors)

First impressions:
I am partial to vintage gillette's but that's all I have used. I saw the feather as-d1 and thought wow that's cool and my fate was cast by this little beauty. It's weight not as bad as I expected and its size makes my red tip and other gillette's look like little toys.

Prep:
Wet face with hot water
Used dove bar soap as pre-shave
Then the barbasol.
The blade a new (astra why not, I am doing everything else wrong)

For a two pass shave I got a pretty good dfs w/ some
bbs in some places.
This razor is mild don't let this fool you. but it got my weeks worth of beard with absolutely not really trying I just scraped my face with it no rhyme or reason other than to get the whiskers off.
A quick rinse a dash of AS swimbo's choice ( Avon musk)

An after thought:
Guys if I can get a good dfs shave with a half-@ssed manner. For those who say this razor sucks give it some more time it just may be right for you. If I can use it this badly and it works, what can you do with it?

Now off to Olive Garden we go.

I want one for all the reasons you stated. But, like you, I can't wrap my head around the price. The Feather AS-D2 will soon be released, maybe then, I will loosen the purse strings. Enjoy your shave and welcome to the best forum on the internet!

Congrats on the promising maiden voyage.

My shaves with the Feather razor just kept getting better. Would like to see your review using a Feather blade.

Congrats on your new AS-D1 and getting a good shave with it!

If you like it and it serves you well, then it is not really that expensive. Life is too short not to shave comfortably and well.

The AS-D1 is my favorite DE razor. I use a few others just to mix things up, including several vintage Gillettes, but I could happily shave with nothing other than the AS-D1 (and usually do)!

They are nice razors that demand a lot of the person holding it in their hand. They require as much concentration to detail as using a straight razor does but for different reasons.

Become one with the razor and it will reward you with the best shaves you will every get.

Glad that it works out for you. This is one razor that I keep looking at but don't buy because I'm afraid it just won't give me a good effortless shave and the main reason is the price. Maybe the new model once more people have reported on the way it shaves.

I would love to do just that. I will do a prep in the normal way then do a proper 3 pass
and report on that. Next off I will get a new soap and maybe some new to be blades i am thinking Kai,med pro, and or 100 pack
of feather blades. Swimbo loves the feather blade ( she better not touch the as-d1) I did catch her eyeing it, she can use some of my vintage gillette's and she has two lady gillete's of her own. So time will tell. A future reviews of the feather as-d1 will be
fourth coming.
cheers gents

I've gotten excellent results with the AS-D1. Not always perfect, but (I figured) the lack of perfection was within me, not the razor and blade combo. Yesterday was the first time I used it with a Feather blade. I've read that they work well together, but come on! ...there are other good & sharp blades so what's the big deal? ...Seems, I underestimated the synergy between this razor & blade. They sing together. There is some kind of magic in this combo. I'll continue with my other blades in other razors, but my AS-D1 will have Feather blades in it from now on. fwiw..

+1 on the feather blade......they were made for each other.

I also get great results w/ a feather blade in a gillette fat handled gold tech almost idiot proof as I can get a bbs shave no cuts/nicks after several beers. But I wouldn't recommend that type of technic. I usually shave at night so it's not like I am having a few beers before I run off to work. And thanks to swimbo she cuts me off at 4 beers or two mixed drinks. Just don't try
this at home or anywhere else. Please!! I just use this as an example of how easy it is to shave w/ this mild but effective razor.

Taking off a week's growth in 2 passes is quite a feat for any mild razor that isn't an open comb. :thumbup1:

+ 1, this must be accomplished through plenty of razor rinsing, for that much growth I prefer a slant or open comb razor, the Streamline works great too. Glad you are enjoying your razor!

That's right I rinse after each pass on both sides of the razor. Then re-lather my face for the next pass. That's what my dad taught me. Rightly or wrongly. But I did learn to shave w/ a fatboy. Which I don't have anymore. I do have several OC razors which I dearly love to me it's the look of an OC that does it for me. And I have 2 red tips. Don't know if I really need another razor. Glad you like your slant.

Agreed the "I" wth? But what ya gonna do? Life is full of toughermysteries like why does SWMBO have to watch reality shows w/ house wives in the name. Take care Cheers:)
