I'm obsessing over those GD scales that get taken off but not reused. I had a few of them but ended up tossing some and decided that I hated that idea. So... here are a couple of my takes on refurbishing the scales so they can be used without embarrassment:
This one was cleaned with acetone (takes off that funky logo and smooths out the razor 'good enough') and then painted with enamel and then coated with two coats of poly. The only hard part was shrinking that penny. Must have washed it a half dozen times before it got down to the right size. The blade is a no-name near wedge that I found in a junk store - cost $5. Shaves well!
Did the same prep with the following one, but coated it with poly and waited until it was tacky - then painted it with Krylon. The result is a crackle effect. The crackle is then sealed with a couple of coats of poly. This works really well for black and fairly well for the other colors. The blade is a Griffon that I managed to break the scales on when cleaning it up.
