Repurposing GD scales

I'm obsessing over those GD scales that get taken off but not reused. I had a few of them but ended up tossing some and decided that I hated that idea. So... here are a couple of my takes on refurbishing the scales so they can be used without embarrassment:

This one was cleaned with acetone (takes off that funky logo and smooths out the razor 'good enough') and then painted with enamel and then coated with two coats of poly. The only hard part was shrinking that penny. Must have washed it a half dozen times before it got down to the right size. The blade is a no-name near wedge that I found in a junk store - cost $5. Shaves well!

Did the same prep with the following one, but coated it with poly and waited until it was tacky - then painted it with Krylon. The result is a crackle effect. The crackle is then sealed with a couple of coats of poly. This works really well for black and fairly well for the other colors. The blade is a Griffon that I managed to break the scales on when cleaning it up.

I heard there are some really cheap razors form china that can be cleaned up. Maybe you could take the scales off them and then use the blade part with those scales your making.

I tried that but they were too nice for those blades. Nothing much can be done with that steel from China.

I did wonder why you wanted all those old scales from GDs that I had lying around

I am just about out. ;-} I have reserved seven for a 7 day set that I want to rescale. I'm testing different methods to see which way I want to modify them. So far, the stiple version is winning. I want to try coloring them - something like the crackle effect only not. Trouble is, I keep finding new ways - the stipple was just discovered this week. So... I'm culturing patience while I figure out the best way...

Figure out how to put a button battery in the cavity of the GD scales. Then wire up a vibrating motor inside and sell it to Schick and Gilette. That, or add some LED's to enhance the design. I've always wanted to add a battery to it and play with stupid ideas.
