Replated razor pics

Here are some pics of the replated Gillette gold Aristocrat razor, I had this razor and a superspeed plated at a professional plater here in Mass. Same electroplate as the original Gillette process. bc

did you have to take it apart to be replated? what about the doors? Did they clean and strip off the remainder of the old plaiting? Any change in the mechanics?

I would very muck like to do this to a Lady Gillette....

I think Lady Gillette's have an anodized aluminum handle. If so, would replating it work?

Hi, I lost the location of the post for a while there. No need to take the razor apart, Gillette originally plated their razors fully assembled in this manner, leave the doors on, when they go into the plating solution, the doors are open all the way to allow for complete contact with the solution. Full stripping is only required if the existing plate is chipped or peeling which would interfere with the transfer of the plate in solution. If the plate is just thin or worn smooth, no need to strip, they are polished and plated, just like that. There is no change in the mechanics, the tolerances of the Gillette TTO mechanism is designed for a little bit of play in normal use and the plate is not thick enough to interfere. good luck, you can contact Reliable Electroplating at 508 222 0620, ask for Dale, regards, bc

You can technically plate any metal since metals are conductive and this is an electroplating process. Anodizing on the other hand is a colorizing process, not as durable as plating, the anodizing would have to be stripped off since it would have an insulating effect, no big deal. Contact Reliable Electroplating in Norton Mass for more info if you like, talk to Dale at 508 222 0620.

Fantastic! Did they also put a coat of lacquer on the doors?

Hi again, Dale does not put lacquer back on the gold, I did not ask him if he could or would, I was pretty happy with the gold plate itself and I like the fact that I can polish it with a normal metal polish intended for gold. Lacquer does funny things and once it starts to go, then it gets spotty and interferes with the polishing of the gold, but, I guess you could brush on lacquer yourself if you were so inclined, good luck with it, bc

wow, are you gonna use them in your arsenal or display it?

Hi, good question, I just wanted to see if the replating would make them look new again and I pretty much like the results. I am having a birth year superspeed done now and an old open comb NEW. I can't sell on B&B yet because I don't have the 60 posts they say I need but eventually I probably will. I have several other aristocrats and supers that I rotate around so I will leave these two un-used for now, regards, bc
