Repair: Reattaching side plate

During cleaning, the side cover of my Super Speed head popped off. (The part circled in the image.) How should this be reattached? If glue, I suppose it must be a waterproof epoxy. But my inclination is to carefully crimp it on with small jeweler's pliers.

Any advice? Thanks.

Solder (as was done originally I think) or as you guessed, epoxy. I did it once, with epoxy, & it turned out just fine. The hardest part was getting the good endcap off the donor razor.

Thanks, Gary. The good news is that I don't need a donor. I still have the original piece.

I think a couple of dabs of a good Super Glue is great for putting end caps on. They were originally soldered but glueing is fine.

Clear marine-grade epoxy would be best.

Super Glue doesn't stand up well to water.

Heat from soldering can cause discoloration of the plated finish . . . I believe they were originally soldered before plating.

I was considering creating a new thread for this, but the illustration is already here, so...

I own only a few Gillette TTOs: 1951, 1975, 1980. That side cap popped off my 1951 SS. Upon close examination of my later Super Adj. models, I see that the end is only a single piece of metal, so no cap is needed. This is the piece that the door hinges are inserted in.

In all the Gillettes, the blade center bar is formed from a folded piece of metal. In the older model, the tabs from the folded bar are further folded outward to form the hinge holder, and this is what's covered by the soldered-on end cap. In the later models, the folded center bar has no tabs, but is soldered (or welded) to a separate piece of metal, which is uncapped and acts as the hinge holder. It's difficult to describe, so bear with me.

My 24 year gap in models is a long time, so my question is, when did that side piece on the heads first become a single piece of metal instead of capped tabs from the center bar? If I had to guess, I'd first start looking at the 50s flare tip or the 60s flare tip.

This 57 FT shows under the head where you can see the center bar metal folded out and capped on the side of the head, whereas this thread shows a 63 ss, and the hinge-holders seem to be the single piece of metal.

Thanks.

I have a 1960 Super Speed, Fatboy and Toggle. All have caps.

My 1963 Slim has no cap. Every razor I have after 1963 has no cap.

Sorry, I don't have a 1961 or 1962 razor.
