There was a post a while back about an app that helped find duplicate pictures and, if I recall correctly, helped in renaming pictures. If anyone has a pointer to the post or an application that would be helpful, I would be grateful to have a link. I am looking to get rid of thousands of duplicates on my wife's laptop and rename the leftover pictures. I am happy to purchase any that are especially good at this.

It should be hard to do in Linux just using a terminal routine. Look into:
rdfind
fdupes
dupeguru
fslunt
rdfind
fdupes
dupeguru
fslunt

Which operating system does the laptop have? Windows or Mac os ?

Mac, though I also have Linux and Windows VMs.

I use it extensively for organizing my image collection.
The ones highlighted by @rbscebu may most probably be available for the Mac os terminal as well being a Unix clone
