What's new

Recommend inexpensive shaving brush for newb.

Will be trying shaving soap. And also be using synthetic gels.

Im thinking maybe a synthetic brush and a badger brush. Dont know about boar or horse.

Just tentatively trying it out, not jumping in with both feet.

I really like the Omega 11047. Small, but gets the job done. Haven't been doing this long, but it also seems like a good value for the money.

How inexpensive is inexpensive to you?

Is $75 inexpensive to you (it is to me when talking about good quality badger brushes)

If $30 is more along what you were thinking for badger

If $35 is inexpensive to you for a fiber brush you can look at this one

Now all of the brushes I have put links out there are acceptable (the Simpsons and Muhle are far above acceptable)

But it all depends on what you want to spend.

If you are in the $10-20 range take a look at some of the Semogue boar brushes

I have an AoS starter kit that has a brush included. I received it for free because they were giving them away as part of a store opening. PM me if you're interested and I'll send it along.

There's also the Van der Hagen brushes, and the tweezerman badger. I haven't tried the tweezerman but the amazon reviews seem to be pretty good. The VDH are ok in my experience. They get the job done.

I think both are overpriced for what they are.
An omega boar brush would be better by leaps and bounds. For badger, whipped dog silvertip are excellent. For synthetic, Frank Shaving is my pick.

I would start with a decent(but inexpensive) boar - the new B&B comes to mind and is pretty well received might be a good place to start, or pretty much pick any Semogue or Omega will be excellent. So many great options for under $20 and all will work great with soaps (or anything else for that matter). The Omega 11047 mentioned above is an interesting little brush in that's a Boar/Badger mix -why pick one or the other? :)

See how that goes and then maybe in a little while if you feel like trying something else - try a halfway decent Badger you can grow with like a Simpsons Best Colonel, Case, Berkeley or Duke.

My 2c

Don't be, you just need something that will make lather and then you'll learn whether or not that's gonna work for you. I will throw in a vote for the B&B brush from West Coast Shaving though, great brush.

I have a small collection of brushes and if I had it to do over again would not purchase a cheap brush - ever - but that's just me. I would never recommend a cheap badger. There are a bunch of nice boars for little money.

Save your money and get one really nice badger - it will last a very long time and you will enjoy every shave.

Coalescing information...

Omega x4
Semogue x3
B&B Essential Boar x2

Start with Boar
Dont buy cheap badger

Frank Shaving Synthetic
Whipped Dog SilverTip

I think Im gonna try an Omega or Semogue boar's hair brush.

Thanks everybody. Im not trying to break new ground here.

Does the bigger the knot the better, apply? Are you looking for a nice rounded like a ball tip?
