Reccomend a modern Old Spice soap, plus a Bay Rum

I'm discovering I like Old Spice, the less powdery vintage Shulton stuff in particular.

The vintage Old Spice shaving soap is a fond memory, but from what I gather it's pricey on the auction sites and the scent is often a casualty of the passing years.

I find that I really like Tabac, can make Williams work for me and have had pretty good results with glycerin soaps like Col Conk's and VDH Deluxe. I prefer the richness of tallow based soaps, but I like a good, slick glycerin too.

Given this, what Old Spice themed soaps can you soap aficionados recommend?

I'm also looking for a Bay Rum soap. I like the scent of Pinaud Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum, love the scent of C.O. Bigelow Bay Rum, and while I liked the Col Conk Bay Rum soap, the puck was gone quicker than you can say "Ben Gunn".

Mama Bears Aged Spice gets a lot of rave here. Burt's Bees Bay Rum Soap was one of the best scented soaps I have smelled. Dismal performance makes it unworthy of use.

Mama Bear's Aged Spice smells exactly like Shulton's to me. I am sure some will disagree, but hey. YMMV. SCS makes a soap called "New Spice" but I hear it smells nothing like Old Spice.

I should have mentioned that I like the scent of the Burt's Bees Bay Rum balm, and have engaged in combat with the Burt's Bees Bay Rum shaving soap.

As mentioned, the scent was OK but trying to build lather with it was pretty much like trying to coax a bubbles out of a ball of petrified earwax with a toy shaving brush dipped in chilled olive oil. I should have tossed it straight away, but I decided that perhaps the nicely scented earwax puck might be redeemed if it was combined with some glycerin soap.

If anybody is considering putting the Burt's Bees Bay Rum Soap in the microwave, I can only say that resulting slime-creature absorbed three rounds of .45 ACP 200 grain Flying Ashtrays before becoming immobile again, and the stench create by the attempted melt made wonder if that was what a deceased Ent would reek like if the body was left above ground during a really hot and humid Summer.

Anyway, it looks like I could kill two soap scents with one stone by ordering from Mama Bear...

I bought Artifact Soap Works Old Spice soap and the smell is GREAT and dead on for Shulton OS but the lather is very weak so I grated it up and mixed it in with VDH to create Van der Spice which is working and smelling very good for me.

+10 on the Mama Bears Aged Spice for a Shulton knock off. I think it's perfect. The alternative is the actual "Shulton" formula Old Spice cream from India, although I found the scent wasn't quite what I remembered, and others have said it may be slightly different. It's still good though, and the cream is a decent performer. You can find it in Indian groceries and shops or on eBay.

I just got some of the Bay Rum from Krissy at Prairie Creations and it's very nice as far as I'm concerned. However, bay rum scents seem to be all over the map, so you'd have to try it to see if it's what you are looking for. The performance is great and it's tallow, if you are looking for that.

+1 for Mama Bears Aged Spice. It was my first soap other then VDH/Willams but man the scent is great. I dont know about how close it is but the soap smells great and shaves great.

I think that it's a quarter pounder.

BTW, today I loaded my brush with VDH Deluxe that's been doctored with the P&G Old Spice cologne, and then lathered up some of the Indian Old Spice original scent cream in a bowl....great combo.

I'm leaning towards Mama Bear for Aged Spice and Prairie Creations for the Bay Rum. The more the merrier.

How much cologne do you splash in your melted VDH to give it a good long lasting scent?

I got the juice at a grocery store on closeout, classic scent, 4.25 ounce for two bucks, so I gave the VDH about four or five splashes, nuked then stirred, then hit it with two more, stirred and let cool.

The combo gives a nice Old Spice type scent, but it does retain some of the powdery floral notes that the P&G has that the Shulton didn't. The reason I'm interested in the Mama Bear version is that some reviewers say it's close the Shulton scent. I have some vintage Shulton cologne, but I don't want to nuke it.

Another vote for Mama Bear's "Aged Spice". You wont look back. :thumbup1:
I dont find Mama Bear's scents strongly fragrant but I do find the Aged Spice pleasantly strong scented that manages to linger just fine

.

I never thought of putting the cologne in BEFORE nuking, I poured mine in afterwards and stirred with a plastic spoon.

I heard someone say that Procter and Gamble only changed the scent of the OS Aftershave and left the cologne as it was. Not sure if that is true or not.

I find that the P&G cologne is more powdery and floral than the Shulton stuff. Or the Shulton is deeper and more spicy, depending on how you want to look at it.

I just got my Ogallala sampler yesterday. I also ordered the 4oz for $1 trial colonge. They sent out the 5 samplers, 2oz of colongne, 1oz each Limes and Peppercorns AS, Bay Rum AS, Bay Rum and Sandalwood AS. They also sent a sample of a bath bar which I used and loved.

I knew nothing about bay rum, or even if I would like it! For about 10 bucks I figured I would take a chance. The standouts in my mind are the Limes and Peppercorns, Sage, and Sandalwood soaps. Ogallala will have more business from me in the future.

Another vote for the Bay Rum. I ordered the shaving soap sampler, along with some other stuff. After trying to use up all of my Col. Conk Bay Rum sampler that I had (I think it multiplies in the bowl) I gave up and broke out the Bay Rum and Lemongrass from Ogallala this week.
WOW! Awesome scent, great lather and cushion. We have a winner. I think the Col. Conk may be destined for the shower as a bath bar.

I hope thats not the bottle you're sending me :glare::biggrin::lol:
