What's new

Really wanted this one.

I don't see why. It's a beautifully carved figural meerschaum. And it's smoked/aged nicely. It also had over fifty bids and sold for over $500.00 Guess to each his own.

I would like to think of myself as open minded and well traveled, but I just find that to be a little weird to smoke.

Smoking tobacco out of someone's skull is slightly creepy to me. I have never understood the appeal of human figures on pipes.

(Which is not to say that OP's post is not a very nice-looking pipe, only that I would never want to own or smoke one...)

Guess it's all in how you see it......I would say you would be smoking from his hat:cowboy:

it's gorgeous... great coloring (that level of coloring only comes with time), and the carving is really on point.

It makes me curious if it was a matter of the carving/coloring that commanded the hefty price, the maker (JLD?) I don't know enough about old Victorian age meerschaum makers, though the 20th century's Bekler and Bauer - both also Austrian I believe, command high prices on their reputation alone...or was it the African-American antique collectibility commanding such a price?

A few months ago I saw a scuttle on ebay from the late 1800s with a depiction on the side of two men of African decent (one in 'field' attire, the other in 'house' attire) both holding straight razors and involved in a cutthroat knife fight... I forget the final price but it was well over $400 if I recall.
