Razors that make it all too easy

I have love/hate relationships with some of my razors. My 40's Super Speed can provide a great shave, but I sure have to work at it. I'll still have to do a lot of touch up after a 3-4 pass shave. The results are good, but it adds an extra 5 minutes onto my morning routine, not to mention the possible irritation I can get from it too.

I don't have the same problem with my Mer-modified Progress. I'm at DFS grade after 2 passes, and the last pass is purely touch up on the tough spots. It all seems TOO easy. I enjoy the shave even more because the razor becomes the tool that it is supposed to be and fades into the background.

What razors fit that bill for you?

That would be the Merkur 39C Sledgehammer. It does make the effort of getting a DFS or BBS shave easier. However, it comes at a cost which is your technique must be down pat otherwise you'll regret using it.

I have had a similar experience, several Gillettes (tech, slim, super slim and fatboy) all did the job, all required extensive touch up. My Merkur HD was a revelation. Quick, comfortable, minimal touch up.

I agree about the SS, but it's still my favorite despite the extra work. It also gives me the least irritation, since I shave at night and take my time. The one that requires the fewest passes and least touchup is my EJ Chatsworth Barley. At 4 oz with the Muhle head it easily gives or comes close to BBS without having to work at it. The problem is that I prefer a lighter razor and CCS to BBS. For now, both the SS and Barley stay in rotation along with a Tech and HD depending on my mood.

For me its my Merkur 1904, but will that be the best for you? The only way to know is to try it and see. Its the same way with just about everything, you have to find out for yourself. What works for one just might not work for you.

I haven't shaved since Saturday morning because I used the 39c. I have a 5 O'clock shadow, almost. Eh just a bit. It took days. No irritation, did a decent job really.

That razor's too aggressive for me though. I want to hone up my straight razor, and maybe obtain a Merkur HD.

Tech w/ Feather blade
5/8 Keen Kutter full hollow straight

Either of these are to shaving as driving a Camry is to driving. Automatic, bland, vanilla, and totally acceptable for daily use.

I purchased an EJ DE87 from shaving essentials a few weeks back and love it. Smooth shave, no nicks, amazing! Have been wanting to try a few vintage Gillettes I recently picked up at an antique shop and don't want to leave the EJ.

I could not agree more with what you say about the Progress, the same goes for the Futur. They get me the desired results with 1 pass plus touchup in great comfort, when adjusted correctly.

The DE89 is unnessecary agressive for me, I can use it with great results, but there is less comfort and more risk of nicks and irritation to acchieve the same result as the Futur and Progress.

My SS and it's clone, the Feather Popular are as you say, not quite aggressive enough. It takes more passes to reach the desired result, costing me time and also more wear to the blades as they have to do the same job twice or more. The Feather is my travelrazor and as such it's just great. The SS sits on a glass shelf looking pretty, which it does very well :)

The Futur and Progress is currently fighting to be my favourite, but it's starting to look like I'm going to have a two razor rotation. They are both fantastic and have cured any lust for more non adjustable razors. The only razor I'd like to try or get my hands on now, is a Fat Boy. But I don't really think it can rival the Merkurs anymore :)

I use a 1956 Gillette Red Tip. I tried, Merkurs Classic, Progress, and Vision and none worked. Went with a BUNCH of Gillettes until I found the Red Tip. Also a 48 Gillette is a close second.

Nobody's mentioned Injectors yet?:001_smile

Actually, even confining it to DE razors, I've found the New and the Fatboy to be very easy.

+1 on the smooth action of the EJ (though mine is a DE89L).
