Razor Engraving

I was looking at a post in the safety razor section and saw the most beautiful engraved set I've ever seen. Got me to thinking, I wonder how hard it would be to get the head of my favorite razor (Merkur HD 34c or Merkur 15c open comb) engraved with my initials? Maybe get gold inlay in the engraving which would look *****'n. Then thought, Hey - that would make a nice Christmas Present too. Give someone a personally engraved razor for a present. Has anyone had/or thought about, having a razor engraved? Inquiring minds want to know.....:biggrin1:

never thought about it till now. not a bad idea. the first place that pops in my mind is Things Remembered, usually pop up stores in the malls. they do simple engraving.

Everyone it seems is into replating but never heard mention of engraving. It would definately personalize your favorite razor and make it a one-up like nobody elses. Just wondering if there would be a problem with the Zamac metal, but if I get gold inlay it would protect the underlying metal. I have a local engraver that did some work for me once before and does excellent work. They do anything from lighters to large plaques. Shouldn't be a problem for them to do the head of a razor. I would definately get it done on my favorite daily shaver and enjoy every moment of it. Plus - look at the heirloom factor.

Cool idea, but I have my doubts that it would work well on a plated razor. I would think, the plating could start to peel at the interface, even if it was inlaid with something. It might be worth a try on an inexpensive plated brass razor, like the Cadet TTO, to see how it goes. For that matter an attempt on one of the Cadet three pieces (non-specified metal heads) would be interesting to see as well. Not too much to loose on those, as they are pretty inexpensive.

I wouldn't try it on a vintage until I'd seen it work on a new specimen. It'd be terrible to sacrifice a vintage - even a cheap one.

I do have a Gillette Redtip that I love and used for years (decades). Getting my initials in Old English on each of the gates would be pretty kewl. Then I wouldn't have to worry about the plating peeling like on the Merkurs.

Find someone who does fine shotgun engraving (old school hammer and chisel type engraving).

I have a friend that trained at Liege and has done custom orders for Winchester and Browning. I doubt that I could afford to even have one initial engraved and inlaid with gold much less my name but he does killer work.

Wow I can imagine my R41 with tight scroll engraving surrounding my initials... Maybe I'll just have to do this one

This would not work on a modern Zamack razor. It would compromise the thin plating and expose the metal beneath to oxidizing and pitting.

Then I will just have to do it to a brass razor like a new LC or an old type... My BRW NEW heads would look very cool with a new gold dress on top

Thee was a member here who did such a thing for the mods as a free pif years ago. Forgot who he was but it was a talent that was second to none. Beautiful work he did. Wish I could find the thread.

bakerbarber nailed it! or was there some else too? That's the one I remember.

Vintage razors are plated as well. IMO it would compromise the plating as well.

I am aware that vintage razors are plated, but at least engraving one of them wouldn't result in the razor being ruined.

I'd say the best candidate would be a modern SS razor, just not the Feather Stainless, as it is also plated.

I wonder if an EJ89 head could be engraved, and why aren't the engravers out there aren't posting pics of stuff like this to give us something else to spend money on...?
