Ray's of Colorado Shaving Soap

Which reviews?

Searched for "shave soap" on eBay and found their listing for "3 Handmade Bay Rum Glycerin Shea Butter Shaving Soap Bars" and then I read the seller's recent reviews. Several of the recent reviews state that the buyer liked the shave soap. So who knows?

I emailed them to ask if they have any samples. Haven't heard back.

Not me. I've given up on trying products made by individual's on Etsy/Ebay. I stick with the tried and true brands.

+1 I'll never do it again after losing $5.00 on a Farmer's Market soap that the marker called the greatest shaving soap ever.

I kind of disagree with you guys on this. It's not about just using what everyone else is using, it's suppose to be a hobby or an interest. Otherwise it's just shaving.

You should expierement with what you can afford. Granted some Etsy stuff has not worked out and is over sold by the maker, but there are other brands of commercially made items that you will miss out on if you just follow the trend. It will also be difficult to form an opinion and hold a conversation about the hobby if you do not.

Granted money is hard to come by these days and I do not know your personal situation but 5.00 is'nt enough to turn me off to a hobby or taking a chance on items. You never know what you'll discover.

There are literally hundreds of independent shave soap makers. Sure $5 isn't a lot by itself, but what makes one vendor better than the other? If someone finds a gem out there, sure I'll spend $5 to try their products, but I'm not about to shell out $5 for every individual who produces a shave soap...

Base ingredients for all goat milk shaving soaps before adding fragrance oils include, Saponified Organic Coconut Oil, Saponified Organic Palm Oil, Propylene Glycol (food grade), Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Sugar, Goat Milk Protein, Decyl Glucose, Lauryl Glucose, Coco Polyglucose, Mica and Bentonite Clay.

There is sugar in the Ray's of Colorado shaving soap!! Why?? Sugar is most certainly not a common ingredient in shaving soap, and I don't think it has any business being there. It's supposed to help increase the lather, and bubble properties of the soap. However, a good shaving soap recipe won't need the help.

According to this website: http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/tipstricks/qt/qtsugar.htm

Adding sugar helps make a light, bubbly lather with large bubbles.

That is the exact opposite of what you want in a shaving soap (since you want a dense lather with a very small bubble structure).

In addition, there are 3 synthetic detergents (aka industrial cleaners, or products used to make laundry soap), and Propylene Glycol (a product similar to glycerin). All products added to increase the foaming properties of the soap. Again a good shaving soap recipe would never need the help.

This is about as unnatural as you can get in a "soap", and I can nearly guarantee you this product will be complete garbage!!!

Further, their shaving soap recipe, and regular soap recipe are nearly identical. Adding clay to a body soap, and forming it into a round shape doesn't make shaving soap!!

Base ingredients for all goat milk soaps before adding fragrance oils or exfoliants include, Saponified Organic Coconut Oil, Saponified Organic Palm Oil, Propylene Glycol (food grade), Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Sugar, Goat Milk Protein, Decyl Glucose, Lauryl Glucose, Coco Polyglucose, Titanium Dioxide.

I wouldn't take any stock in Ebay reviews of shaving soap. Very likely to be the person's first go at a shaving soap, so they have no background with which to declare how good the soap is, or is not. They are also thus 100% clueless as to how a shaving soap is supposed to perform.

I'll chime in. I did buy a three pack of this goat milk shaving soap the beginning of the year. I ended up giving them to a friend as part of a starter pack, but when I showed him how to use the DE I used this soap. The lather was actually very slick and quite plentiful, not airy and bubbly like the description, quite creamy in fact and I had an irritation free shave. The scents are very weak however, which was unfortunate. Overall though I was quite impressed, especially since shipping included I spent about $8 for three pucks. I was very comfortable sending them off with a friend.

Honestly- every one of the home made shaving soaps I hve tried from ebay have pretty much sucked. I need to add a dab of a decent cream to make decent lather. I would guess I have tried about for of these Homemade brands.

When I first got into wet shaving, I was a bit naive and ordered this soap first because it was the cheapest to try. I actually liked it quite a bit. Then I got soaps like Razorock which were better and didn't go back to Ray's. Honestly though, it really wasn't that bad... the sandalwood had a very pleasing scent.

I ordered one just now, the Cocunut and Lime (really going out on a limb with that one I usually do earthy stuff) but for 5 bucks and free shipping who cares if its not the greatest, its not like its a huge investment. I'll try it and if I don't like it, it can sit.

I’ve learned my lesson.
No more “artisan” soaps for me!
I tried Ray’s of Colorado lavender shave soap from eBay -$5. shipped.
Five dollars is not a lot of money but when it ends up in the garbage 3 days later that is a shame.
3 days & 3 different brushes and couldn’t work up anything that looked like an acceptable lather.
What I could manage dissipated on my face very quickly.
I do have fairly hard water and take this into consideration with soaps. Even with less than ideal water my Pre de Provence produces a mountain of luxurious lather.
A very mild and pleasant scent but didn’t smell too much like lavender.
It left my face feeling very dry.
I sent some product feedback to the company and received a rather curt and uncaring reply.
Straight into the trash.
