Rank these blades!

Hiya folks. I've been an electric guy for the past ten years, but just switched to DE about two weeks ago. I'm interested in trying out a bunch of different blades, so I bought this big ol' sampler from "100 BEST" on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002Z6YXIW/ref=oss_product

I don't know where to start! So, just for fun--if you know some of these blades, how about trying a ranking? Here's what I've got, in no particular order:

* Feather Hi-Stainless
* Kai
* BlueBird
* Derby
* Astra Superior Stainless
* Super-Max Platinum
* Super-Max Stainless
* Trig Silver Edge Stainless
* Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Stainless
* Treet Classic
* Lord Classic
* Lord Super Stainless
* Lord Platinum Classic
* Lord Super Chrome
* Shark Super Stainless
* Crown Super Stainless
* Asco Super Stainless
* Big Ben Super Stainless

So there ya go. Think you can rank all 18 different blades? (I'd be particularly curious to know what you think of the four different Lord blades.)

This is how I'd rank the ones I've tried on you list.

  • Feather
  • Astra (as long as it's the Platinum. I'm not sure how they're labeled...)
  • Lord Platinum
  • Lord Super Chrome (I think these are the same as Shark Super Chromes)
  • Lord Super Stainless
  • BlueBird
  • Derby
as a rule I'd say anything with platinum will be better than just straight stainless steel. Also, once you get through all of these, you should try out the other Gillette 7 O'clocks, some Iridium Supers, Personnas (either the Red Pack or Israelis), and the Gillette-made Wilkinson Swords. Have fun!

My ranking of the blades on your list that I have used:

* Super-Max Platinum
* Feather Hi-Stainless
* Super-Max Stainless
* Derby
* Astra Superior Stainless
* Treet Classic

I really like the SM Platinums and have used them off and on for three years. I have noticed that they seem to be catching on over the past few months.

Here is how I'd rate them:

* Feather Hi-Stainless
* BlueBird
* Astra Superior Stainless
* Super-Max Platinum
* Derby
* Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Stainless
* Shark Super Stainless

Of all of them, the feather is the only blade I shave with on a semi-regular basis.

If you'll check the wiki you will find a razor blade ranking chart. However, blade performance is so subjective that you simply have to try them to find what you like and dislike.

Actually there are eight Lord brands on your list, including the Shark, Crown, Asco, and Big Ben.

I have shaved with only three and would rank them:

Shark Super Stainless
ASCO - orange wrapper
Crown - blue wrapper

The Shark is noticeably smoother and sharper than the other Lord brands I've tried, including Silver Star and Racer. Most of them do an OK journeyman job, but nothing special.

The Shark is also the longest-lasting blade I've tried.

If your Treet Classic has "Durasharp" in red on the yellow wrapper, it ranks up with the Shark, though not as long lasting.

I would save the sharper blades like Feather for last in your series of trials.

As always with blades, YMMV.

That's quite a sampler that you got. Of the blades I've used, I'd rank them as follows:

* Feather Hi-Stainless
* Super Iridiums
* Astra Superior Stainless
* Kai
* BlueBird

They cost a little more than most of the other blades in your sampler but I have found them to be worth the difference. Of course, YMMV.

* Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Stainless
* BlueBird
* Super-Max Platinum
* Kai
* Feather Hi-Stainless
* Super-Max Stainless
* Derby
* Astra Superior Stainless
* Lord Platinum Classic
* Treet Classic

1) Feather
2) Shark Super Chrome and Stainless (I can't tell the difference between them)
3) Super Irridiums
4) Astras
5) Treet
6) Super Max

1. Kai
2. Feather

Above is IMHO, I just finished my 10th shave today on a Kai and only started using blade maintenance techniques after the 3rd shave. Feathers were sharp but didn't last.

My derbys were dogs and the walmart personna's just don't do it for me. Back in the day it was Schick Platinum's all the way! Spoilers weren't bad. Regular Gillette Stainless were nothing to write home about. Some Wilkinsons were good some weren't, based on the country they were made in I think. (Confusing, are these Wilkinsons or are they Wilkinsons?) I don't know which of the Dorco's I had, but they evidently weren't the good ones. Schick 2002's were pretty much a joke. We were just talking about how rare they were.
Gillette Green's, Bluebirds sitting around waiting their turn. Someone is PIF me some Gillette Yellows and Iridiums. Can't wait. I expect an Iridium/Kai showdown, but I hear great things about Yellows. May start shaving twice a day to get in the blades.

best and good luck,
mrscottishman

In case anybody was anxiously awaiting the results:
I rotated through all these brands and models over a year and kept a detailed journal on each blade.

In the end, these are the ones I liked (in no particular order)
* Feather
* Kai
* Derby
* Lord Super Chrome
* Gillette 7 O'Clock

I really really really wanted to like the Shark blades, but they just left me completely red and irritated.

My FAVORITE, based on a minimum of skin irritation, sharpness of blade, durability, and price is DERBY!
I bought a 100 pack of Derbys off Amazon.

Now, to get rid of the 40 or so other blades I have left over, I put them all in a pile. I alternate between Derbys and other blades, chosen at random. In another two years or so, I'll be due to buy more blades!
