Quick Question About Homemade Bay Rum AS

Hey guys, I really like my Ogallala Bay Rum AS but I have this horrible habit of trying to make everything myself... Anyway, I want to make my own Bay Rum AS and plan on using the recipe from the Art of Manliness:

* 4 Ounces Vodka
* 2 Tablespoons Jamaican Rum
* 2 Dried Bay Leaves
* 1/4 Teaspoon Allspice
* 1 Stick of Cinnamon, broken in pieces
* Fresh Zest from a Small Orange

I have some essential oil of Pimenta Racemosa but I don't know how much to use... On the same page they have a recipe for a flippin half gallon of AS but it uses weird crap that I neither have nor am used to (like pulverized magnesia) but it calls for only 2 drams of the oil which seems like very little for 65 ounces.

Any recommendations? Any recipes out there that are tried and true? I know there have been many threads out there on the subject of homemade Bay Rum but searching through all of them the recipes seemed to be slight variations of the one above...

Thanks!

A little oil goes a long way, so when you make your own stuff, keep in mind you can always add more, but you can't take away.

I would pick a solid amount, say 100 mL's, and mix based on parts. Maybe try 7 parts (70 mL's) water, 2 parts (20 mL's) of the rum, and 1 part (10 mL's) of vodka. then try adding one bay leaf, and see what you get.

I should say I have never made my own after shave, so all of this is just based on solution prep I have done in labs and schoo, etc. But, I think starting small is a good idea. No point in mixing up a whole bunch of aftershave that turns out bad because the ingredients are a little off.

Good luck.

I don't know what they could mean by pulverized magnesia except for maybe Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate).

Anyway, in your smaller recipe (which sounds pretty good), it sounds like you want to use the oil instead of the actual bay leaf. This would be to your preference, but maybe start with 3 drops?

I have seen other recipes on the internet, and the ones you list look pretty good.

I have made my own. add a little bit shake and smell, add more. let it rest a day or two smell it and make adjustments. There is a lot of experimentation here. good luck have fun.
