Question for the Rifle Historians: M14 vs M1.

No, not the .30-06 vs .308 question. This concerns something seen earlier this week, that some sort of official investigation determined the M14 to be an inferior rifle to the M1. Sorry, don't have the URL to evaluate the source. Was wondering what in the world that was all about, especially since Garand was behind both the M14 and M1, and the M14 made it through US military trials prior to its adoption. Knew that the M14 had fully automatic fire (and was uncontrollable on that setting), but thought the magazine vs stripper clips, and lack of "M1 Thumb" would have been seen as a plus.

Anyone heard of this before, or was someone blowing smoke?

********OPINION ALERT ******
So they turn to another even lesser rifle...the M16. Gotta love it.

I never heard Dad complain about the M1 thumb, but at the time he used one he had other things on his mind...like ducking. Artillery was nasty also.

A bit of history. Just a thought.

The M14 Rifle: John Garand’s Final Legacy

My father talked more about the M2 than the M1. Closest to a negative remark from someone who used it was an uncle who preferred the Thompson. He was in the Pacific Theater. That leads to another can for worms.

I have 3 Garands, and two m1a/m14s, preference, the m1. I currently reside, in the peoples socialist democratic republic of NY, so 10 round mags are max. The Garand, loads faster, instead of removing a Mag, and stuffing in another, the Garand is ready to take a fresh one, because the clip rejects. I compete with the same two m1s, and one of them is on its third barrel, and the other, is in need of its second. I love the m1

I'm biased: I qualified expert with the M14 and stood many a sea and anchor detail with one. I have limited experience with the M1.

M14

I have an M1A and and M1. I prefer the M1. On the firing line in high-power competition I can keep up a rate of fire with the M1 as effective as I can the M1A. The M1 holds fewer rounds, eight compared to the M1A's 20, but can be awfully fast to reload.
