I have had a decent mustache since 16 (puts it at 25ish years now) and I don't think I've ever let it grow out longer than a month befor using clippers to prune it back. I have worn a goatee (or square/circle beard) along with my mustache much of those 25ish years too (because I have a really "cute" dimple that sucks trying to shave and makes my cherub face too irrisistable). I've let that grow as long as 2 months. My growth rate is close to 1/8inch per 7-10 days (I am part wild animal)After about 1 1/2 weeks of wearing the mustache, I decided it's just not for me. Maybe in a few years when my beard develops more it may be. For now I'm just gonna wear a smooth clean shaven face.
...However you wear your facial hair you gotta own it.
I think the western mustache and beard look great BUT the hat may be what pulls it all together! That's the key...own your mane.
And thanks for the compliment. I've had a beard in one form or another for more than 20 years, but this is the longest it has ever been by a LONG shot, and I've never worn a mustache until the last year or so...
That's the key...own your mane. If you embrace it, love it, and wear it with pride and confidence, people around you will accept it as you.
No matter what your facial hair looks like, there will always be some jerk that gives you a hard time about it. Don't grow it for them. Grow it for you. Because not only will that jerk always be there, so will those awesome moments when a random stranger offers to buy you a beer at the bar because your beard/mustache is awesome. Or that incredibly attractive 22 year old that just smiles and says "Nice beard" when you walk past her at the crosswalk. Or that WAY over excited 15 year old kid that just got his first 3 beard hairs that treats you like a deity at the book/toy/comic/video game store, just because of your facial hair.
Always remember that your beard/mustache grows just for your face. There is no other one that will fit your face, and no matter how it starts out, if you let it grow to maturity and wear it with pride, it will look awesome.

Epic facial hair and great advice! I'm currently one week into growing a stache like yours, and have had only minor pokes made at me. I made my wife promise to not say anything this year. I tried growing one for Movember last year and she made so much fun of me after 2 weeks I lost all confidence and shaved. On average, 2-3 months should lead you to mustache epicness, but that really depends on the kind of mustache you want. I've always had a beard, but I always trimmed my stache until recently. It has been 4 months since I've trimmed the 'stache in this picture that was taken this morning...

At 4 months, I can curl it into a nice, natural-looking, western-style stache that sits nicely on top of my beard. With a little more wax and effort, I can turn it up to a nice handlebar, if I choose. I can also skip the wax, and let the ends fall down into the beard, but I don;t really like how that looks.
At the end of the day, the length of time it takes depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you want styling options, it's going to take several months to get enough length to style it. If you just want a fuzzy lip, about 8 weeks should do it, depending on your growth genetics.
Growing facial hair is a commitment. You have to be resolute, and grow through the insults and jokes, because we all hear them. Grow it for yourself, and your confidence will shine through. If you wear it proudly, people will have a difficult time giving you crap for it...
PS--DON'T TRIM!! Until you get to a place where you are able to achieve the style you want, don't trim. Trimming early only prolongs the process. If you want to grow longer than a troublesome length, you will have to grow past it. Trimming back will not get rid of the troublesome hairs, it only sets back the time it will take to grow past it. Longer staches are easier to maintain, and softer, so just grit your teeth, use some wax to keep it out of your mouth, and grow through it...
i have a handlebar and when i started my wife made fun also, but when when she was out walking with me and heard how many strangers make positive comments about how cool it is... anywhere form in line at the grocery store, to just walking down the street, now she likes it and would think it would be a shame to cut it off. now she can feel like she is out on the town with a celebrity.
That's a lush beardI felt a disturbance in the force. Someone said my name....
