Question about early Gillette blade holders...

So,, I got a half-decent single ring set at an antique shop,, and I was wondering: what is the purpose of the little ridges on the bottom of the blade holders...???

Match striker for sure. It says right here in this ad:

"The empty one (blade bank) then forms an elegant, waterproof match-safe."

My digital camera is a bit crappy,, but I'll try to get some pictures up in a bit...

I think I did alright at the antique shop... I bought an open-comb NEW for $3,, a "bag of razors" for $5 (which contained a bar-handled Tech,, a Schick Krona,, and an early Super-Speed),, and the complete single-ring setup for $8........

My friend also bought a mint 1912 Gem Jr. for $8......

I've been searching for years to find "strike-anywhere' matches,, with no luck.... I bought the last two boxes of "Ohio Blue Tips" at the local market when I was about 15...... That was over 10 years ago,, and I haven't found another box anywhere.....

On to the pictures (sort of).....

The "camera" that I used was THIS: http://www.amazon.com/Jazz-JDC5-Digital-Keychain-Camera/dp/B000FL9R8U/ref=pd_sim_sg_3

Mine is a green version with "Miller Chill" logos all over it... It was a crappy give-away promo for an equally worthless "beer" that tastes like 2-day old drive-through Mt. Dew with just a hint of seawater in those melted ice cubes.....

After just over 100 attempts,, these were the best... In the future,,, I may just use my laptop's built-in webcam and hold the items in my teeth,,, as I had done previously......

Strike Anywheres are commonly available in many states....some states have restricted them.

Just take a look at any grocery outside your state and you should find plenty of them.

Here in a vintage silver matchsafe...

I found this old gem at the local antique store…..I admit I MAY have been looking for Gillette razors.

And in a modern matchsafe

I would like to find an old Gillette blade case/matchsafe someday.

I haven't seen the matches for sale around here,, but I haven't been looking really hard either.... I need to go to a few new grocery stores and look around again.... The only problem with ordering online is the shipping....

I doubt PA has restrictions on them,, but who knows...???
