pull-up bars

Can any of you guys recommend a good home pull-up bar that won't break the bank? I'm over 6' tall and probably weigh about 240 lbs., if that makes a difference.

Thanks.

I have an Iron Gym and when I got it I weighed about 210 and it worked fine for me. There is also the Iron Gym Xtreme which looks fantastic, a lot of grips.

I do touch down briefly after each pullup to alleviate stress on the door.

That's cheating, Tim! kiddin', o' course. I'll second the Iron Gym. This is like what, my 12th plug for that thing? I want royalties. I'm looking at the Xtreme. Liking all the grips.

That looks perfect, thanks. Do they sell it in sporting goods stores or do I need to order it online?

You can find it in stores. I've seen it in Target, I think, so probably sports stores would also have it.

Hmm, Ive seen it advertised. Ive just always been afraid the thing would beat the crap out of the door frame etc...

I fluctuate from 215 - 225 would I be ok using this thing?

The limit is about 300 libres. Most people near that can't do pull-ups anyway. They'd need to stand on something, which would take some stress off of the door and bar. Hell, most people period can't do pull-ups.

I was planning on starting with negative pull-ups, which I suppose will put more stress on the bar. Do you think it can handle it?

I have an Iron Gym and my buddy uses all the time, about 280 lbs. You should be fine to use it. I guess make sure the doorframe you are putting it on is up to par! Ill have to look at the extreme... interesting

Thanks... Ill have to go out and grab one of these. Ill also check the doorway I use is nice and secure.

As far as pullups the army made me do my fair share of them ;)

Yeah, it should be fine, man. Negatives are a good place to start. It shouldn't be that much more stressfull on the bar, if at all.

I use the edge at the top doorframe. Works just fine and strengthens your grip too. No problems with weight - I'm 6'02" and 250.

I too have an iron gym. Myself and two other roommates (640lbs total) did a few pullups on it simultaneously, held up like a champ.

I live in an apartment and weigh 200lbs. The stress on the door frame definitely scratches and dents the trim. I actually cracked the top trim on one of my door frames to the point that I can't use that door anymore.

One of my buddies uses washcloths where the bar touches the door and he says that keeps the denting to a minimum.

Don't let it slow you down though... You can fix a door, but there's nothing quite like knowing you can do multiple pull ups.

I know - I used to be able to.

I did buy an Iron Gym today and tried it out a little while ago. It seems to work well, so thanks for the recommendations. My schedule has really been keeping me from getting to the gym during the week, so it's nice to be able to do some more stuff at home. (I used to harbor fantasies of really getting into CrossFit, but for now I'll be happy just to get myself out of blob territory! :blushing:)

Your mile begins with a step. You've begun.
I'm 58 and as some know work out on machine weights 45 minutes to an hour every morning followed by a targeted 40-45 minute dawn 5 mile run/jog which begins about now. Been doing this for a long time. Ya got to start somewhere. You can do what you decide to do Do it:001_smile

(Pull ups kind of a rough way to start)

We have an Iron Gym pull up bar at work. It tends to migrate between office doors. We have a couple of 200+lb guys that use it and I've seen a 250 pounder us it as well.
